Are 29000 KSIs a year reasonable or unreasonable?

I know Labour cllrs are desperate for attention in LibDem controlled Sutton, but this motion about e-bikes is just "hang-the-bastards" moral panic.

There's KSIs and destruction daily from motorised vehicles, and Labour's cllrs are mute.

Just to make my point as Bluesky-clear as I can: the 20mph speed changes are good news and the reduction in KSIs is amazing.

But bad charts are misleading, and should not be employed under any circumstances because they undermine the argument.

I honestly don't know the answer, nothing by way of KSIs on MAVRIC.

Possibly a high volume of minor shunts or issues pre 2021.

MoD road, they do things a little differently to your average highway authority.

The UK Road Safety Strategy adopts a Safe System approach with a target of a 65% reduction in KSIs by 2035. With lower urban/village 20mph implicit within a Safe System culture they will become the norm in the UK. #20splenty is making our places fit for the 21st century.

Reminder that steaming is a perfectly legitimate of making a burger. Just remember to get a little pyrex bowl and put it in the steamer next to the meat to melt cheese in.

Over the same time horizon, these bike-inflicted fatalities and serious injuries comprised about 0.05% of all pedestrian KSIs, so obviously we're laser-focused on the pressing danger here.
September 15, 2026 at 6:49 PM
If we saw half the outrage towards fatalities and serious injuries caused by car drivers as we do when bike or ebike riders are involved then we may see a change in attitude and a reduction in KSIs.
But we don't, society shrugs it's shoulders & moves on because the convenience of driving trumps all.

5) If you are complaining about being ‘nearly’ hit by a bike or seeing cyclists run reds, but you’ve never mentioned the 29,000 motor KSIs or endemic speeding & phone driving; you’re not serious about road danger, you're just unfairly othering cyclists as a uniquely law-breaking collective

I don’t see the outrage, the horror the posts, the call for change about driver and car carnage. Just silence about the 29000 KSIs every year. Every year.

Here’s a taste from the last couple of days…

Something nearly didn’t happen. Can you point us at the posts you made about the transport mode that KSIs over 29000 people a year in the UK. Every year.

I’m glad you’ve done the research on the causes of KSIs for pedestrians. Over the past ten years? What is it, about 15,000 pedestrians injured every year. 3/4 of them by car drivers. So let’s say 100,000 people in that time. Number of peds killed by cyclists? 10 maybe. You see the problem?
September 16, 2026 at 10:11 AM
💯

but the data tells us they are not an actual risk. And that strong risks are because of drivers and cars. But I don’t see the volume, noise and worry about the 29000 car KSIs every year. EVERY year.

Car brain.

I think we’re discussing two different metrics here. You’re right that we have safer roads than other OECD countries and KSIs have fallen over the past few years, but there are still too many of them.

Well you're innumerate then. Look at the respective KSIs for motorists and cyclists.
September 13, 2026 at 6:15 PM
No, it’s about 250 times higher. It sounds like you’re citing total KSIs by vehicle type involved, which embraces both victims and perpetrators. If you look at pedestrian deaths by “other vehicle involved” you see 500+ pa for cars in the UK, 1 or 2 for bikes.
September 14, 2026 at 5:51 PM
But falling off isn't anywhere near the biggest cause of cyclists' KSIs. It's being hit by motorists and in those cases, head injuries are less frequent than, say, crushed organs. Stop giving drivers a get-out clause.

It's good to see Newcastle in this list. It's even better to see Gateshead and Sunderland in there as they're both Reform controlled.
Default 20mph limits are proven to reduce KSIs.
