Fuck me, but I love the way Māori were not at all afraid of a scatalogical reference.
Us: Look at the beautiful lights in the sky!
Our tīpuna: Looks like the goddess of the night is taking a shit.
A Screengrab of Te Aka Māori dictionary on the page for “kurakura”. The first definition is “1. (noun) excrement, faeces.” The second term is “Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō 1. (noun) aurora australis, southern lights - a luminous electrical atmospheric phenomenon usually of streamers of light in the sky above the southern magnetic pole.” So the translation of “Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō” is “The faeces of Hinenuitepō”.

11pm Sunday night (1/6/2025) near Motukarara south of Ōtautahi ChCh, NZ when the KP8 Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō #Aurora Australis was at its peak.

I'm not lying when I say I haven't saturated this image at all. Look how much ambient warm light was illuminating the foreground.

The stress of having one digital camera body while out shooting Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō #Aurora Australis & taking a timelapse when you look back over Hereweka towards Ōtepoti #Dunedin & the moon is setting.

So of course I had to capture it. Otago Peninsula is beautiful.

Appreciate how BONKERS Monday night's KP8 Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō #Aurora Australis was, this is a super massive panorama about 170° wide & 70° vertical.

Motukarara south of Ōtautahi Christchurch, the biggest Aurora I've witnessed in ChurChur.

#Nikon Z7ii 20mmS ISO2000 10sec f/1.8

A massive aurora with red rays above & yellow / green band at the bottom. A farm paddock with a large puddle from recent rain reflect the night lights. Some trees in the distance & a fence.

When you find that hidden gem within the 300 images that make up a 30 second (over 45mins) timelapse of Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō Aurora Australis.

Found the image & processed it as I would an image (different look to video).

A single image from 300 I took to make a time lapse showing a massive aurora colour light display in the sky above some hills & a body of water

All Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō #Aurora Australis are different, but some follow similar patterns of movement & energy.

This big ray in the middle of the image literally only lasted possibly 20 seconds in total - I was just lucky to have my shutter open when it appeared.

Ōtepoti Dunedin, NZ

A frame from a timelapse of the Aurora last night. There's water, a head land an aurora & the reflection of the aurora in the water. There's spiky rays too

This is what was kicking off over my left shoulder - it was a hard decision to stop the timelapse sequence for sure.

BONKERS KP8 Aurora going off in the southern sky with a headland in the distance & aurora reflecting in the still waters of Hoopers Inlet. So hard to explain as the Aurora lost all 'order' a mish mash of oranges, reds, yellows & greens

Ok, charge your batteries folks, Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō Aurora Australis looks like she's going to be putting on a wee show tonight. Sorry I can't say how far north this will be. But Kp5 isn't normally visible north of ChCh
The ovation model from SpaceWeatherLive showing the aurora oval has grown massively as the impact of the solar winds intensified. Potential good Aurora tonight in lower New Zealand

Same location just a couple of minutes before.

The serendipity of spotting the Ngā Kurakura o Hinenuitepō #Aurora Australis kicking off in my rear view mirror, I pulled over & there happened to be a massive puddle in the paddock!

Motukarara south of ChCh 1/6/2025 (I prefer this one)

yes! up until recent releases it was fairly standard for crash to have a different title theme in Japan, this song is actually a cover of the console's title theme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdN6...
