I think possibly coming to this side of production more in an era where transient shaping, clipping, limiting and saturation can all be handled independently I'm less attracted to the "magic black box" approach to it all. But again the LA2A does just slap big time so I might just be wrong.

Yeah I've mostly been sticking to what I have. Getting a lot of use out for the free Klanghelm stuff, the UA 1176/LA2A and the Brainworx SSL channel strip. The Kiive Audio stuff is nice too, the developer's super helpful when you report bugs

Side chaining is useful, in the right hands. It can allow snappy transients to poke through the texture.
That said, i never use it. Instead I use the appropriate compression device (like an LA2A) and set it appropriately.

LA2A? Sure. Now we're talking. Even those old dbx 160's worked for me. An SSL buss compressor is my jam.

Here's one of my presets showing UAD and UADx integrated. This is my guitar channel with the UAD Helios preamp, verve Analog Machines for some color options, the 1176 and LA2A, and the API eq. Super easy to choose other options but a good starting place.

I love Analog Obsessions 1176 (FETish) and LA2A (LALA). Both are free.
You might try backing off the mic a bit more than you'd think too. Of course, this depends on the space you're recording in. If you don't have a good space, it's not too hard to assemble a makeshift vocal booth

Some producers put a light compressor first in chain on vocals. Not wrong, but I think a clipper does a better job catching peaks. Then I finish with an LA2A or 1176 as a last thing in the chain, depending on the vocal.

Revisiting The Grifters' discography & holy shit I love them & also those might be the most compressed guitar sounds I've ever heard. Memphis magic. Every guitar sound is squashed as hell but also sublime. LA2A or 1176? Probably both!!
