A flash of colour hidden in stone.
#Labradorite is a #feldspar #mineral famous for labradorescence—brilliant flashes of blue, green, gold, and other colours. This optical effect occurs as light interacts with microscopic layers inside the mineral, creating its unmistakable shifting glow.

The AMNH mineral hall is genuinely one of the best in the world. That labradorite slab showing full spectral labradorescence never gets old — it's Bragg diffraction from twinning planes making those colors, not pigment. Pure physics on display.

Labradorescence & Light

Labradorescence is stunning, but the metaphysical application is where it becomes truly interesting.🤔

Today's ROTD ⚒️ 🧪 is Labradorite, a member of the Feldspar family. The Feldspar are a large group within the Silicate Minerals family, the largest group of Minerals in the world. Labradorescence is the optical effect/phenomena belonging to Labradorite. It is the only Gem that can have this name.

Gorgeous technicolour labradorite!! This labradorescence shows a range of colours across the labradorite, a variety of feldspar that is primarily the mineral anorthite. #MineralMonday #GeoscienceBluesky ⚒️🧪

The answer is labradorite!! It is a feldspar variety in the albite-anorthite series that has the cool iridescent optical effect called labradorescence. #GuessTheGem #GeoscienceBluesky ⚒️🧪💎
Guess the Gem today!! What mineral or variety do you think this gem is? Hint: it has a schiller. #GuessTheGem #GeoscienceBluesky ⚒️🧪💎

Check out this video of labradorite, showing labradorescence having different colours along the zoned crystals. Some are showing bronze interiors with bright blue rims. #MineralMonday #GeoscienceBluesky

I’m excited to share a new paper examining the colonial legacies of the Hunterian’s Mineralogy & Petrology Collection and their impact. More work to do there and interested to see where geoscience collections go with decolonization.

As the first new mineral reported from what become Canada. Locally know as the “Labrador stone” and “firestone”, it's distinguished for the spectacular displays of iridescent colours what give it its "labradorescence". 3/4

For Stribog I'd pick labradorite, because labradorescence is commonly associated with the Northern Lights, and Stribog is from the Far North! Simple as that.

My Labradorite Stone

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral that exhibits iridescence, or a shimmering effect, known as labradorescence. It's named after the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered. Labradorite can be gray, white, brown, green, blue, orange, pink, yellow, or colorless

Christmas market finds! 🎄There was an artist who creates these little felt mouses and pairs them with antique and vintage objects she finds. 😭 I fell in love with this wee mouse with her stunning vintage perfume bottle! 🐁♥️ Also found a light purple labradorite for my collection!

Some small treasures from Czechia. ♡ Handmade candle decorated with dried flowers (a little piece of the country's nature), porcelain deer figurine from an antique shop, labradorite palmstone from a gift shop inside the clock tower of Karlštejn castle 🏰, Art Nouveau in Prague book & Mucha goods. ♡

Labradorite seems to be attempting to compensate for the blandness of its fellow feldspars.

What you're talking about is technically called "labradorescence" and happens due to light diffraction in really, really tiny closely spaced crystals of orthoclase and labradorite.

Labradorite:
- Feldspar group mineral
- Forms in igneous & metamorphic rocks
- The shiny effect (labradorescence) is caused by microscopic lamellae which act as diffraction grating & cause colourful flashes
- Named after its type locality, Labrador Peninsula, Canada #minerals

Title: Labradorescence
Author & Artist: ymz

Such a delicate tale.
The art is incredibly atmospheric, you can almost hear the trees rustling. The story simply softly dissolves, subtly revealing its characters like watercolours on a page.
