...and I wonder how much this preference for simplicity and unfussy clean lines ends up inadvertently excluding or rendering invisible the contributions of lacemakers -- traditionally feminised labour (lacemaking) seen as a frippery while the tailor (traditionally male) still gets to contribute.

Also people were coerced into lacemaking in East Asia and yeah that tracks (there’s even research into how it happened in South Asia—India specifically) but who did it? Where? When? How did that evolve into mechanized lace factories? Where do crochet lacemakers still work? … Nothing. Just. Nothing.

I can catch a whiff of people saying that lacemakers were killed during the French Revolution or traditional kinds of Chinese embroidery nearly died out during the Cultural Revolution but looking into “why” or “who” or “what exactly happened” leads directly into dead ends.

Maggie Hensel-Brown does these great "community" lace projects as a way to celebrate lacemakers. This article gets at the key point: we almost never know their names, but we see their stuff in museums all the time.

Oh but sometimes they’ll be so “kind” as to allude to lacemakers as trapped victims who could get employment nowhere else, whether that’s true or not, and the owners of lace factories and schools as the “real villains“ (but also the real movers and shakers)

Unless you’re trying to sell something by invoking the history of lace. Not the lace industry, and certainly not the lacemakers. *Just* the lace. And whatever lie anyone has to tell to justify that is told and blamed on the lacemakers themselves, still using their work all the way.

Someone asked me (ME!) a real question about needle lace history but, as far as I know, it’s not addressed in any of the lace books I have so I got to start experimenting with the process today

(It’s about gripping the needle. Very obscure stuff but fascinating to lacemakers.)

Oddly, there were still professional lacemakers, and there are til this day, but I saw someone gushing over Ferragamo the other day without mentioning the famous lace shoes, the intersection between Ferragamo and celebrities, and without mentioning Ferragamo’s new lace trade school

Any obscure word can show up in the crosswords, and lacemakers are constantly irked by "tatting" to mean all lace....
