Lesenswerte Tipps des US-Soziolinguisten George Lakoff („The Political Mind“):
Tips to keep democracy alive in 2025:

1. Be Brave. Avoid helpless/hopeless talk. Authoritarians want you to feel powerless because it makes their work easier. Courage, faith, and optimism are essential. Fascism feeds on cynicism and pessimism. Starve it.

George Lakoff has entered the chat
“He’s pissed!” Carlson said to extended cheers. “Dad is pissed. … And when dad gets home, you know what he says? ‘You’ve been a bad girl. You’ve been a bad little girl, and you’re getting a vigorous spanking right now.’”
Tucker Carlson says father Trump will give ‘spanking’ at rowdy Georgia rally
The riff set the tone for Donald Trump’s rally in Georgia less than two weeks before Election Day, underscoring themes of retribution that have long propelled his campaign.

George Lakoff and I pushed this simple and reasonable idea years ago. When I returned to journalism, I realized the problem. Editors care more about SEO and controversy (=clicks) than about whether the headline is destroying truth. Incentive is to bait engagement at all cost.

George Lakoff said the Republicans were the "strict father" party (in contrast to the Dems' "nutrurant parent" model) but under Trump it's clearly shifted to the "abusive father" party. For sadists, by sadists.
I realize that "the cruelty is the point" has gone from incisive to banal to cliche but it cannot be emphasize enough that the actual deliverable of the Trump administration and indeed of all Republican violance is suffering and memes of it for the base to laugh at. It's the Bully State.

Politics is the art of making people care. Effective movements *shift the polls* by framing issues as moral questions.

If the fascists can make people care about conspiracy theories like QAnon, we can make people care about freedom and democracy.

(George Lakoff wrote several books on this.)
"normies do not care about this thing and so it is no use raising a stink" is imho just an excuse for not doing politics, which is the job of making normies care about something

A big difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans understand the science of political communication. Republicans dictate the topics/terms of debate while Dems (and the left) usually burn energy in constant response.

Thiel and Co call this mimetics, Lakoff calls it framing.

My Berkeley colleagues & I are saddened by the death of our colleague Robin Lakoff. Her 1972 book Language & Women's Place created the modern field of language & gender. She also wrote articulately, passionately & impactfully about Latin linguistics (Abstract Syntax & Latin Complementation, 1968) 1/

As George Lakoff says, when you use their “framing,” they’ve won. You need to reject their framing altogether and have your own (accurate!!!) message.
I wish people on the left would stop using “diversity hire” or “affirmative action” to describe folks like Hegseth. This reinforces the racist, sexist notion that diversity and affirmative action are promoting unqualified people, doing the right’s work for the.

begging literally anyone in the democratic party to read Don’t Think Of An Elephant or even a single essay by george lakoff
that crew is absolutely the type to never learn from george lakoff and simply take the right’s messaging and change one word. their policies are also bad.

they’re definitely not fit and will fight, as you say, the previous war

Stelter coined the phrase back in 2018, inspired by linguist George Lakoff. www.cnn.com/newsletters/...
