In Australia had cave showing 45,000 year old art and implements from human habitation. A bloody iron ore mining company blew it up a few years ago. And yes they knew it was there. Traditional landholders devastated, as was anyone caring about history & culture. Like blowing up Notre-Dame Cathedral

There’s too many people on both the right and left who are convinced that migrant workers aren’t relevant to agriculture and that the landholders are simply harvesting all the crops personally

Wouldn’t it be fun to see the carbon offset industry get as angry at the fossil fuel industry as they get at scientists & environmentalists who call bullshit on ‘carbon neutral fossil fuels’

If we scrapped fossil fuel subsidies we could easily afford to pay landholders to store carbon #climate

To clarify: this is 99% distributed solar, not big utility-scale solar farms. This is landholders, artisans, & small businesses installing panels because grid electricity is expensive & unreliable & Chinese panels are dirt cheap.

No waiting on large, corrupt institutions. Bottom-up revolution.

There is also the rural gentry of large landholders, car dealership owners, and inherited multi-generational medium sized family businesses (which may also be a car dealership)

Gina Rinehart and Hancock Prospecting are among the largest private landholders in Australia. If she wants to give away her own land to Elon Musk, go nuts.

The Roman setup is actually kind of unusual: you have a fairly weak state (no big centralized king), a relatively low tax regime, where the major tax is a tax on landholders to pay soldier wages (tributum) which is assessed based on property but remitted if you are actually serving that year.

So now I have to print out a new sheet and cut out one extra farmer card. 🫠

(For those getting excited, the occupations aren't very granular: there's 'king' (me), upper aristocracy, other large landholders/clergy, skilled artisans, unskilled laborers and farmers.)
