I am doing research for a new book. Today's tidbit for you is that the oldest law in Iceland, Úlfljótslög, dates back to 930 and states that ships that had mastheads with gaping maws had to take them down before land was sighted, so they wouldn't rouse the landvættir (the guardians of the land).

The Guardians/Landvættir: A king sent a wizard to check out #Iceland, so he went in the form of a whale but was repelled from each of the quadrants of the isle by a dragon, eagle, bull & giant. This is the #Icelandic football team logo 🇮🇸

I'm obviously biased, but I think Iceland has the coolest coat of arms.
Iceland is protected by 4 guardians (landvættir); an eagle, a dragon, a bull and a rock-giant... but also NATO.

To be fair, the "entertaining supporters" are no less cool! That's the landvættir (land wights), guardian spirits for each quarter of the country: The bull in the west(fjords), the eagle in the north, the dragon in the east and the (mountain)giant in the south.
It seems a shame that 20th-century Iceland abandoned its ancient coat of arms of a crowned stockfish for a mere armorial version of its national flag (albeit with some entertaining supporters)
