Yesterday's hike to Stanton Lake took us into a wonderland of western larch with their needles lit up with the colors of autumn.

Landowner David Hampton planted larch pines in a douglas fir forest in Oregon in the shape of a giant, 300 feet smiley face 🙂 Every autumn the larch pines turn orange and the smiley face stands out.

Got a little artsy 🤣 on Saturday at Stanton Lake where the reflection of the golden larch trees with the grass tufts on the log caught my attention. Short hike, big rewards.

The lawn, pale gold with fallen needles from the weeping larch, was slowly dying, starved and lightless. The white ceramic surface, almost spherical, was dusted with a gritty red deposit, rippled as if left by water drying in the sun. My breath was harsh and tarnished by the passing years; no-one paid attention when I tried to warn them, hearing only rust and verdigris.
