The grey-cheeked fulvetta (Alcippe morrisonia) is a species of bird in the family Leiothrichidae, the laughingthrushes. Endemic to Taiwan, it is a common year-round resident found in montane forests and other upland habitats across the island. Measuring about 14 centimetres (5.5 in) in length, it has brown upperparts, buff underparts and a predominantly grey head, with a conspicuous white eye-ring and narrow dark crown stripes. It readily joins mixed-species flocks, often acting as a nucleus species around which other birds congregate. It was first described by Robert Swinhoe in 1863. Blue-crowned Laughingthrushes (Pterorhinus courtoisi) are Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List with a decreasing population trend, with a maximum estimate of only 249 adults in the wild. The species is endemic to China but the last remaining tiny breeding area is in the Jiangxi Province. The bird trade has/is the main cause of population decline, as well as habitat destruction. It is a forest dwelling bird that eats invertebrates, fruits and seeds. This photo was recently taken at Marwell Zoo (September 2026).

My time in Kaeng Krachan included a visit to Mr Bird’s Bird Hide. A constant conveyor belt of new species, supplemented by the highest density of squirrels I’ve ever witnessed. Kalij Pheasant, Grey Peacock-Pheasant, White-crested Laughingthrushes, Bar-backed and Green-legged Partridge were the best

Globally, China brushes off its competition as the highest user of wind energy and has the highest installed capacity.

There are still birds in China, with around 1,300 to 1,500 species present, including unique species like pheasants and laughingthrushes.
