...so is it time to throw a funeral for LCDM? That depends on who you ask 😂. It's certainly a sign that DESI's DR1 results were not a statistical fluke. Even if LCDM prevails, SOMETHING is weird and that's a great sign that we're learning something new.

Here is a "contour" plot that summarizes what these new measurements have to say about the behavior of dark energy, + my annotation. Either a lot of people are misunderstanding something big about the data, the Universe is playing a cruel trick on us, or LCDM is wrong.

We recently fit this model to cosmological data and find it works better than LCDM, because it resolves the Hubble tension.

I am 28. For as long as I could form long-term memories, the nature of dark energy has been characterized as a "cosmological constant" (the 'L' in LCDM). Its density appears to remain constant even as the universe expands. Though kindergarten Claire didn't give it much thought...

While the headline takeaway from the ACT results yesterday was "LCDM is fine", the headline from DESI is quite different - evidence for evolving dark energy, at up to 4.2 sigma, and over 3 sigma even without any supernovae, which persists with many different combinations of datasets. 🧪🔭

Combining data from CBI, DASI, BOOMERANG ++, Seivers et al. measure the age to be 13.7 +/- 0.2 billion years in near perfect agreement the modern value. This is when cosmology becomes a precision subject, giving tight errors on LCDM.

There’s been no proposal for any modified gravity theory (or anything else) that has worked better than general relativity + dark matter + a cosmological constant (i.e., LambdaCDM) on the cosmological data. So that’s the sense in which LCDM is standard.
