the fundamental question I have had for these applications is how can LLM or statistical based methods support the "lectio difficilior?
I see discussions of using AI to restore inscriptions or papyri, presumably by using brute force to assemble parallels. I assume this could also work for classical art history, i.e. dating vases by style (vibes or Morellian). But can AI do good philology ? I.e. offer brilliant emendations to ms ? 1/

I'm reading this article and the Shakespeare example is fascinating.
"lectio difficilior potior: The reading that is stranger is stronger."
YES!

This is a very good essay, & touches on one of the most important convergences between tech-utopianism & fascism, namely the pursuit of homogeneity.
Homogeneity in literature dulls the mind & sharpens the fear by which people become stupid & obedient.
Homogeneity is a gateway to fascism.

a more complex issue than people think
1. lectio difficilior is a basic, if not somewhat flawed, principle that when there are manuscript variants, the more difficult or strange option is to be preferred because it is unlikely that copying error or scribal intervention would produce something weird

Listen, if I'm clicking through your institute's website and not only see (1) a writing group (♥️) but also (2) that this writing group is advertised with a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon, I'm going to be a fan.

And yet there is substantially no difference between this and practicing “lectio divina” and letting your (or your pastor’s) vibes about the bible and Jesus guide your decisionmaking.
This may be a fundamentally new kind of sin blending blasphemy, idolatry, divination, and simony, among others. Those who are not horrified at this may be entirely lacking in authentic religious awareness and feeling.

The great thing about the Ornithologist in Residence at an ancient church thing is that by drinking tea and chatting we learn from each other.
Today I explained the contemplative practices of Lectio Divina and Imago Divina to Alex and he was like... That could actually be really helpful in Science.

What does an ornithologist in residence do? There's the important sound answer: talking about nature and the environment with communities who are deeply rooted in community and compassion, reflecting on millennia of change from a structure standing for 1146 years.
