#leguin
No Wolfe or LeGuin is objectively hilarious to me.
The list seems to be mostly about what movies were released recently.

I know with only 10 entries it's hard to have picks that everyone would be happy with... That said, not having anything by PKD, Lem, LeGuin or Banks there hurts

To mangle a quote from Leguin

you've got your liberals, gentlemen. What are you going to do with them?

At least not profitably. Best case scenario, you die a hero like LeGuin

pretty sure LeGuin was talking about my dad when she said "we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid."

That LeGuin quote is exceptionally pretty.

the worlds of Francois Schuiten, particularly in works like Zara and Nogegon. LeGuin also has some fun worlds---i believe one story was about a small, caterpillar like alien that died trying to communicate with its human researchers through the assumed-universal language of maze navigation

even Ursula K LeGuin could not imagine a world without such malevolent forces as "the senior author on your paper"

The Farthest Shore by LeGuin? I don't remember if it has dragons but other books in the series do.

I know of Ursula. K. LeGuin through her reputation.

She’d destroy JK Rowling effortlessly. And that’s even still the case despite her being deceased.

No Kim Stanley Robinson, Ursula LeGuin, William Gibson, Margaret Atwood, Jeff Vandermeer, Cixin Liu, N.K Jemison? List lacks something.

This is LeGuin, too, right as usual. Every utopia contains a dystopia, every dystopia contains a utopia. Though I like Elizabeth Bear's (and Darren Anderson's) construction better: Every dystopia is someone's utopia, and vice versa.
I wrote at some point back on the other site that the people living in the Capital and enjoying a spectator sport in the Hunger Games didn't think they were in a dystopia, and lots of people see that as success rather than both evil and failure
Sometimes people basically "understand" Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or whatever but they choose to favor the bad guys anyway, because they have bad values and the bad guys embody those things. It's not always a problem of literacy! In fact it's arguably a type of very successful reading!

This sounds like the founding of a civ in a LeGuin novel.

Ursula Leguin would approve.

Oh, I used to have so many LeGuin books.

Sometimes the out of touch stuff works out. I raised my daughter on Star Trek (original), Philip K Dick, Ursula LeGuin, Ween, Thrill Kill Kult, Leonard Cohen and Godzilla.

Her peers wouldn’t touch 90% of that crap with a 20’ pole, but there’s a whole new generation of Ween girlies out there now.

And on this, I took a Political Science Fiction class in college where we looked at speculative fiction through the lens of political science.

We read LeGuin, Herbert, Heineken, and Atwood.
To be honest, that’s me with most Kubrick films.

Incredible films.

Some of which I can only watch once.

Clockwork Orange is a movie I’d have DNF’d if I didn’t have to watch it for a class.
