As a great lexicographer once confided to me:

"We can't change things in the dictionary if you don't change them first."
Yes.

ribcage

Done.
Rib cage is two words. I know this, and yet I need two passes to catch when it's been closed up because my eyes slip right over it. Can we just close this term, please?

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your résumé?

Historical lexicographer: I assume it was in oral use, but simply not found in the written record.
Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume?

Comic book writer: I was thinking.
Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume?

Comic book editor: When we got the InDesign proof, there was a templating mismatch between the color TIFs and the letterer's Illustrator file, so the balloons detached from the panel border, and it was after 6pm on print day so we missed it

One time a guy name-dropped me to…me. I said I was a lexicographer, he said he had a friend, Jesse, who was a lexicographer, praised him/me elaborately (& himself, for knowing him/me) for a while, I assumed he was joking & said "Yes, he's a great genius," guy turned white when he realized the sitch.

I adore Fred Rogers, but… *cries in lexicographer*
“Love isn’t a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.” -Fred Rogers

Happy 97th birthday to the greatest American to ever live.

Reading Noam Chomsky for my linguistics class.

Dad (lexicographer) said Chomsky’s politics are much better than his linguistics. Mom (copy editor) said Chomsky is an important linguist with terrible politics.

Yes, my parents are divorced, why do you ask?

Welcome to the wonderful Merriam-Webster lexicographer Peter Sokolowski! @petersokolowski.bsky.social

'Merry' wears a special grammatical holiday sweater in the song “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” since 'merry' describes “rest” and not “gentlemen.”

It really means “may you gentlemen rest happily,” and not “may you happy gentlemen now rest.”
