The narigama is a mischievous yōkai that sports a flaming rice pot on its head. This one has clearly modernized a bit

One of the more tragic cryptids is the squonk. Supposedly so ugly that it would avoid its reflection and dissolve into tears if cornered. Wow, I can feel the dysphoria metaphor.

The feathers and beak are a nod to Nancy Springer’s “Byrd Song” short story.

Today’s cryptid is a Jorōgumo (a spider lady) but I wanted to give her a twist. I based her on the nananana makakiʻi, or Hawaiʻian Happy Face Spider and put her in more casual clothes than the typical layers of kimono.

Thimblecrabs take up residence in any brikabrack they can find. When surprised, they explode into dust and reappear by next Tuesday.

They’re the primary cause for objects being moved in the night.

No one’s judging you for reading them, Flatwoods Monster.

(My favorite cryptid that’s probably an owl in a tree stump.)

Is this tatzelwurm about to eat a nest full of eggs?

Nope! Turns out it’s just a mama reading to her kids.

Tatzelwurms are mythical cat-headed serpents that roam the woods of Central Europe.

The aqueous mouse is one of the more prosaic cryptids, rarely getting a mention alongside more famous mothmen and bigfeet.

It’s a mouse that lives underwater. … That’s pretty much it.

@mc.frontalot.com’s “Scare Goat” name-dropped this one and I had to draw it.

Today’s cryptid is one of the classics: the Mongolian Death Worm.

Huge stylistic shout outs to Frank Quitely. Huge caterpillars with baby hands are wonderfully grotesque.

The Mongolian Death Worm can supposedly kill with a spray of venom OR a jolt of electricity.

Today’s #LibraryCryptid goes out to all the caretakers and educators. This little mushroom guy is trying their best to read with little ones popping up everywhere.

Of the many conspiracy theories surrounding Mt Shasta, one of the weirder ones is that of a race of mushroom men there
