On #R4Today, #NickRobinson asked if it really matters that foreign millionaires can buy or rent UK politicians.

I see only two possible outcomes:

1) Robinson resigns / is sacked; or

2) the #BBC is stripped of its ‘British’

#Complicity in #betrayal of #LicenceFee payers is not a good look.

The govt needs to back the BBC and enforce the law. There is no way that those 1.5m homes are not watching any live TV from the BBC/ITV/C4/C5 .

They are scumbags who are cheating the system.

#LicenceFee
Social media posts claim 2.4m households have cancelled the BBC licence fee since 2020.

We’ve found no evidence to support this figure, which the BBC doesn’t recognise. The number of licences in force fell by around 1.5m between 2020/21 and 2024/25.

Claims that 2.4 million households have cancelled the licence fee since 2020 are circulating online. But we’ve found no evidence to support this figure, which the BBC says it doesn’t recognise.

@bbcnewsnight.bsky.social Dare I say it? Bloody typical of the #BBC!

#Farage must be in ecstacy, agreed just in time for the #LocalElections!

Who pays you, BBC? And I don't mean us #LicenceFee payers!
This BBC immigration and asylum story is a moral panic. Poorly evidenced, generalised panic about a marginalised social group. Next week, the government will respond with a new 'crackdown'. This will then further exacerbate public anxiety.

You know who wins from all of this, Nigel Farage.

BBC committee recommends reducing TV licence fee and modernizing funding model
The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (DCMS) has recommended significant changes to the BBC's funding model, including reducing the annual TV licence fee from £180 to a more affordable rate and expanding the fee to cover modern media consumption beyond traditional television. The committee's report, prepared ahead of the government finalizing the next BBC royal charter for 2028, argues that the current licence fee system is outdated and no longer fit for purpose. The report highlights that while 94% of households use BBC services, only 80% pay for the licence, with the BBC having lost £1.2-1.3 billion in licence fee revenue over the past decade. The DCMS also recommends that the BBC develop an international TV licence to maximize global audience reach and revenue, and that the corporation should not overpay for overseas content to attract younger viewers. The committee supports opening the iPlayer to content from other public service broadcasters like Channel 4 and creating original content for YouTube. Additionally, the report calls for the BBC to take on an additional responsibility to counter misinformation and disinformation. The BBC welcomed the report, acknowledging that the current funding model is outdated and needs reform, while also recognizing the need to evolve and move faster towards the future. The committee chair, Dame Caroline Dinenage, emphasized that the BBC is a vital national institution that drives the creative economy, supports democracy through media sovereignty, and delivers world-class entertainment. She warned that continuing on the current path would lead to a 'managed decline' of the BBC, urging the government and BBC to work together to create a leaner, more efficient broadcaster equipped to compete globally while maintaining trust at home and abroad.

BBC Licence Fee Rise Sparks Drop in Payments as Half a Million Stop Paying
The BBC has faced growing concerns over its financial sustainability following a significant rise in the annual licence fee, which now stands at £180. Recent data reveals that half a million people have ceased paying the fee in the past year, raising questions about public support for the corporation's funding model. The decline comes amid ongoing debates about the BBC's role as a publicly funded broadcaster and its ability to remain neutral in an increasingly fragmented media landscape. Critics argue that the subscription-based approach could undermine the BBC's mission to serve all citizens equally, while supporters emphasize the need for modernization to adapt to changing viewer habits. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has been tasked with addressing these challenges, but the BBC has declined to comment on recent reports. This shift in payment trends highlights broader tensions between traditional public service broadcasting and the rise of digital platforms, prompting discussions about how to balance accessibility with financial viability. As the BBC navigates this transition, its ability to maintain public trust will be crucial to its long-term success.

BBC staff voice concerns over presenter salaries as job cuts and licence fee decline affect morale
BBC employees have expressed growing dissatisfaction with senior leadership following the publication of the broadcaster's latest list of highest-paid presenters. Anonymous staff members told The Independent that morale has deteriorated as well-known on-air personalities continue to receive substantial salaries and, in some cases, significant pay rises, while many employees face modest annual pay increases, limited career progression and the prospect of redundancies. Their concerns come as the BBC prepares to reduce costs by £80 million, with plans to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 roles across news, television and radio. Staff described what they see as a disconnect between senior management and employees working behind the scenes, arguing that those responsible for producing programmes receive far less recognition and financial reward than high-profile presenters. The BBC defended its approach, stating that it must remain competitive to attract and retain talented employees while balancing financial pressures and delivering value for audiences. The debate has intensified after the corporation's annual report showed that the number of television licence fee holders fell by approximately 540,000 over the past financial year, leaving 23.3 million active licences. The decline comes as the Government reviews the BBC's Royal Charter and considers the broadcaster's future funding model. At the same time, the BBC launched a high-profile campaign encouraging viewers to pay the licence fee, featuring several well-known personalities whose salaries were disclosed shortly afterwards. The combination of falling licence fee income, planned job losses and high presenter pay has fuelled internal criticism and renewed public debate about how the publicly funded broadcaster allocates its resources.

Was reflecting last night on the ongoing validity of the #licenceFee and the need for us to pay for #PublicServiceBroadcasting: something struck me ... the BBC is older than television. Auntie started in 1922, the licence fee started in 1923 and is based on the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1904.
