For me, VR fills the gap left behind by all the bespoke peripherals and controllers of the mid console era. The lightguns, the dance pads, the bongos, the whatever-the-hell Steel Battalion had. It's the flexible, open possibility space for when standard game interfaces aren't cutting it anymore.
