Is there a linguistics take on #PublicDomainDay? I tried to make this Wikidata query of linguistcs and philologists who died in 1954 (=70 years ago, losing EU copyright). It seems to include Lucien Tesnière 🐦🐦

Every now and then I forget I studied linguistcs (no degree though).

Words do more than people realize.... in linguistcs/information theory, that's deletion... seeing new patterns when an elements removed. There's a reason why a lot of original thinkers are dyslexic....

The grammarians fundamentally think about linguistic variation differently. In modern, Western linguistcs, we think of dialects as "containing" variants.
The Arab grammarians thought of words as containing variants, these variants may be typical of different tribes.

Yeah, it was. I was Linguistcs/Cognitive Science with an AI focus but Linguistics didn't have assistantship so I ended up TAing Revelle College's Humanities program at UCSD.
He was an amazing lecturer.

Funny note: He later moved to UGA where both my wife(ex) & I were.

Oh… I'm so used to the more common use of "etymological", I didn't get that at first, sorry (our linguistcs prof in Münster made a big thing about the distinction between synchronic origin and diachronic history).
