#livebearers
by the way, since livebearers love hard water, neocaridinas love consistency, and these get so much rain, i've chosen a very strange substrate

1/3 New preprint from #NearLab led by @chasedbrownstein.bsky.social Here we show species-rich freshwater fish adaptive radiations (notably cichlids, but also killifishes, pupfishes, and livebearers) were enabled by a shared mechanism: retained saltwater (marine salinity) tolerance

I have a friend in her 80’s that I help with her aquarium. This is her tank. I think she’s done really well with growing the plants. And all her fish are fat and happy.

I love this tank so much. My 20 gal long, deep substrate tank full of endler/guppy hybrids that have been breeding willy nilly for 5 yrs. The camera doesn't do their iridescence justice! So many colors and patterns, I see something new every time. #fishsky #livebearers #aquarium

In livebearing fish, fertilized eggs grow in the female until they hatch + the free-swimming young are released to the water. But even among livebearers, the least killifish has an uncommon breeding strategy: young are released over several days or even weeks instead of all at once #25DaysofFishmas

One of the coolest ichthyology discoveries I’ve heard about in a while. Large pregnant female livebearers with male reproductive organs found in the wild. Goes to show how fluid sex and sexual traits can be.

Male Copulatory Structures in Reproductively Functional Female Live‐Bearing Fish Pseudopoecilia fria
We recently discovered a population of the live-bearing fish Pseudopoecilia fria (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae), in which females were found to possess gonopodia, reproductive organs normally excl...

My indoor tropical #fish #pond is starting to really look like a proper pond! I’ve got some algae issues I need to figure out how to address (recommendations welcome) #fishkeeping #livebearers #platys #animalroom #aquarium

our backyard is now home to baby blue tongues 🥹💗 I'd never seen a baby one before, they're so cute. we looked it up & they're livebearers, litters range from 10-25 babies, and are self-sufficient from birth.

Secondary tank update. The two ember tetras, two Enderly livebearers, 3 Otocinclus and Herbert are all doing well. 2 it of the 3 emerald Neocaridina shrimp have been MIA for a few days. Hope they are just hiding in the moss.

NOT what it says on the tin: Despite the name, least killifish isn't in any of the (multiple) killifish families but is in the family Poeciliidae, sometimes known as livebearers. Other species in its family include familiar aquarium fishes like guppies and mollies #25DaysofFishmas

Oh yeah. those are very interactive. With each other and you.

Fish are educational as hell in that regard. Even the little colorful livebearers that nobody respects have personalities.

Little crayfish did not make it! Reassessing my parameters and buying online with a neocaridina order this time. Tank is like, 8 yrs old and used to breed mystery snails and various livebearers. I feel like it was a Petco issue and not user issue. #pets #prettymuchwhyIorderallaquaticstuffonlinenow

We're all breeding livebearers now.
Been busy most of the day, what’s this I hear about coddling mollies

I appreciate the livebearers

So proud of my student Sheila Rodriguez Machado who overcame so much to defend her PhD dissertation. We met in Cuba 🇨🇺 in 2018 and she has grown into a powerhouse of an ichthyologist. She worked on the systematics and biogeography of poeciliids (livebearers). She is going on to a postdoc at Yale.

(I admit I'm also the person who doesn't want to get livebearers because I don't want to have to find homes for guppies.)

My girlfriend who I love very much, don’t get me wrong, is of the opinion that it’s weird and unsettling that dinosaurs hatched from eggs and instead thinks they should’ve been livebearers. And I don’t think any other hot take could ever compare

Merry #fishmas! Here’s a view of my indoor #pond where I house my colony of Endler’s livebearers (Poecilia wingei). I’m intending to add some other #fish to this pond in the future. Any recommendations? (Recorded 11-24-24) #fishsky #pets 🐠

This is the 10 gallon that's actually closer to 7. Sweet pea, the golden mystery snail and Murf, the ivory mystery snail, are still doing well. The Livebearers are feisty, the Ember Tetras are stoic as ever, and there's a healthy population of both shrimp and bladder snails. #🐌 #🐟

2nd tank is developing nicely. Finally seeing some algae on the rocks. All the inhabitants get along well. Current pop: 4 Ember Tetras, 3 Endler's livebearers, 3 Otocinclus, 3 mystery snails, about 8 Neocaridina (blue, green, orange), 3 Marimo Moss balls and bladder snails barely under control.

this is how the tank's doing after a few days of settling - and this is how my new betta, johnny, is looking. handsome little guy 🥰
