Ukraine launches major overnight drone attack on Moscow region, targeting oil refinery and military sites #Ukraine
Ukraine launches major overnight drone attack on Moscow region, targeting oil refinery and military sites
Overnight on May 17, Ukraine launched a drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding Moscow region, with residents reporting numerous explosions throughout the area. Among the targets were the Moscow oil refinery, the "Elma" technology park, the Raduga machine-building plant, and several other military sites in the region. Explosions were also heard in the nearby cities of Khimki, Lobnya, and Naro-Fominsk, according to Russian news outlet Astra . Local residents described hearing a large number of blasts and said Russian air defense systems were active throughout the night. Monitoring channels released videos showing multiple attack drones flying in formation toward Moscow region targets. One of the resulting fires broke out at the local "Elma" technopark, a facility specializing in electronics manufacturing, control and measuring instruments, optics production, and material processing, among other technologies. The Moscow oil refinery was also reportedly hit. Open source intelligence channels also reported an attack on the Raduga machine-building plant in the Moscow region. Raduga is known for developing cruise missiles and other missile systems. Monitoring groups shared additional footage from the aftermath of drone strikes, including images from the Solnechnogorsk oil product loading station in the village of Durykino, outside Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin has confirmed that drones targeted the Russian capital. "As a result of the drone strikes, according to preliminary information, twelve people were injured. Most of the casualties were construction workers near the entrance to the Moscow oil refinery. The plant’s technological processes were not disrupted. Three residential buildings sustained damage," Sobyanin wrote. He also stated that during the night, Russian air defense forces shot down more than 120 drones in the region. Operations at Moscow’s main airports-Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Ramenskoye (Zhukovsky), and Sheremetyevo-were temporarily limited, impacting both incoming and outgoing flights. As of the time of publication, Ukrainian officials had not commented on the drone strikes in Moscow and the Moscow region. This comes just a day after drones reached as far as Russia’s Stavropol region and Tatarstan, striking several industrial facilities. On the night of May 15, drones also targeted one of the largest oil refineries in Russia.
