On our 2nd trip we were lucky to see a loggerhead turtle wrestling some food from the dead coral for a few minutes before swimming off. It was amazing, but bittersweet to wonder if it would have stuck around longer for a healthy reef.

We’ve made a $50 donation to OIST’s Coral Project. So far.

Privatizing federal land sets a dangerous precedent for Georgia’s top loggerhead sea turtle nesting habitat.

This island is supposed to become wilder over time, preserved in its primitive state, but what these land exchanges do is take things in the exact opposite direction.
Proposed federal land swap draws battle lines on Georgia’s Cumberland Island
The proposal has already encountered local hurdles.

Cumberland Island is home to more endangered loggerhead sea turtle nests than anywhere else in Georgia. Once those nests are gone, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬.

Protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, loggerhead sea turtles still face threats as protections for the nesting beaches where they lay their eggs are weakened. Protect the turtle—and the shore where its next generation begins.

Today’s #BirdoftheDay theme is #Borbs; little birds looking round and plump. I have no idea what these two #LoggerheadShrike are doing, but it’s kinda adorable considering that they’re known as the “butcher bird” for how they deal with their prey. Southern Florida. #Birds

Loggerhead
Class: Heavyweight
Once used for transporting logs to a lumber mill (hence the name) the trailer has been converted into a giant ballista to fire those logs at the opposition instead. Logs can cause immense damage on a hit, or create obstacles for rival contestants.

Also tons of lovely birds, kestrels, Shrikes, A very helpful Phoebe that kept the flies away from our camp, and very photogenic Scrub Jays, also endemic to the island.

Oh wow she's so cool! Tbh I've never seen a sea turtle even though apparently loggerhead sea turtles specifically can be found in the waters this far north (I assume they're just not very common).

Sea turtle tracking project to identify vessel-strike risks in Biscayne Bay
Virginia Key, Fl. — University of Miami scientists are tracking loggerhead sea turtles in Biscayne Bay to better understand where their movements overlap with vessel traffic, information that could help reduce the risk of boat strikes in one of Florida’s busiest marine environments. The project is led by Chris Long and Mitch Rider of the Rosenstiel School of Marine Atmospheric, and Earth Science’s Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS). It is supported by a grant from the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate Grants Program, which funds research, conservation and education initiatives benefiting Florida sea turtles. Why it matters Sea turtles in Miami-Dade County face an elevated risk of injury or death from vessel strikes, particularly in Biscayne Bay, where high numbers of turtles and boaters share the water. Conservation and outreach efforts are limited by a lack of detailed information about where and when turtles are most vulnerable. During fieldwork completed in late August, the researchers fitted five loggerhead sea turtles with high-resolution Fastloc GPS tags capable of recording depth. The instruments will provide information about the turtles’ movements, habitat use and the amount of time they spend near the surface, where they are more exposed to passing...
