The timber industry would finally gets its unions by the 30s, but these were located more in the mill workers than the loggers themselves, as the industry moved toward outsourcing much of the cutting to independent operators, turning them into a petit bourgeoisie and killing radicalism there.

Disque then announced the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen (Four-L), which became the nation’s first government-sponsored company union.

Disque initially dismissed the sanitation concern. Then he sat down to eat a typically horrible meal the loggers were served. He changed his mind overnight.

Troops would be interspersed with civilian loggers but the military would not allow them to live in the conditions that lumber workers endured daily. Getting out the cut required government intervention in the industry’s sanitary regime.

Made up primarily of experienced loggers, the Spruce Production Division helped the military acquire the necessary wood, placed Army men among the radicals in camps, and limited drafted Wobblies from spreading their doctrine into the Army mainstream since many radicalized loggers made up its core.

The IWW expanded out of its eastern Washington and Idaho base, opening an office in Klamath Falls, Oregon and leading western Washington loggers out of the forests in July.

When workers at the Humbird Lumber Company demanded, “clean bunk houses, decent food and the eight hour day,” the company refused and the loggers joined the growing strike.
September 29, 2026 at 12:58 PM
Building upon the actions of the Idaho loggers, the IWW called for a strike in the pine country on June 20 and then an industry-wide strike effective through the Northwest on July 17.

In April, loggers near St. Maries, Idaho walked off the job when their bosses refused demands for improved bunkhouses and better food, higher wages, and the eight-hour day. By June, some camps near St. Maries had forced employers to grant eight-hour day.
September 29, 2026 at 12:57 PM
The IWW figured out that what motivated loggers was not the overthrow of capitalism, but living cleaner, more comfortable lives. The IWW organized effectively around this issue and in the summer of 1917, engaged in a series of significant strikes to press this agenda.
September 29, 2026 at 12:57 PM
Adulterated food, a lack of bathing facilities, meat covered with flies, toilet pits next to overcrowded bunkhouses, rain-soaked bedrolls spreading fleas, and many other daily indignities had convinced many loggers to join the IWW in the years after 1907.

Because they elected a fool.

#Louisiana and their #GOP leader Gov Jeff Landry just declared a state of emergency over Louisiana’s diesel fuel shortage…during peak harvest season.

An old man told me a legend of before my time.

Hell's Angels were trying to set up shop all along Hwy 101 from SoCal to the tippy top of the Olympic Peninsula of WA. They stopped in Forks, the loggers weren't having it. Town-wide brawl ensues.

The only ppl in jail were a cpl underage drinkers.

The app says a washer is free. You arrive, and there's a finished load sitting in the drum. Who is that machine actually available to? A School of Emergent Priorities poster counts the difference. #slopU

Finished Is Not Free: Claim Latency and the Availability Figure in 26 Shared Apartment Laundries
A research poster from the School of Emergent Priorities instruments 78 washers across 26 shared apartment laundries with door and cycle-end loggers over fourteen weeks, covering 38,441 completed cycles, and separates the booking platform's idle-machine figure from the machines a resident can actually use. Median claim latency between a cycle ending and the drum being emptied is 34 minutes (IQR 11 to 96), and 22.6% of loads remain in the drum at two hours. Counting a machine as available only when it is both idle and empty brings reported availability of 71.4% down to an effective 48.2%, with the shortfall reaching 44 percentage points on Sunday evenings. No machine was added anywhere in the portfolio over the study period.

Before politics, Troy Jackson was a logger willing to block a border for working people.

In 1998, he joined Maine loggers in a blockade over wages and working conditions.

That fight led him into politics. He later led the Maine Senate.

Now he’s taking that fight to the U.S. Senate. 🔥

When I worked on The Bachelor, we had TWO teams of 14 loggers who worked literally round the clock on logging and transcription. All 28-30 of them, replaced by AI. One company. Hollywood has hundreds, if not thousands, of production companies.

'Many loggers turned out for Trump in the last election. London credits this to Trump presenting himself as someone looking to “fight against the man,” someone who would lower grocery and gas costs and rid Washington of corruption.

But that feeling is gone, she said.'

'Loggers are facing increased costs across the board and a shrinking workforce. The industry in Maine is mostly made up of small, family-run businesses that have been passed down from generations, Doran said. But many longtime owners are now urging their kids not to go into family business.'
