Two pictures in Poplar.
The first is the Balfron Tower on the Brownfield Estate.
Designed by Ernő Goldfinger and completed in 1967 as social housing (although no longer all social housing).

Always worth looking up in London.
This is a floral art installation in Slingsby Place near Covent Garden. On particularly sunny days, it fills the ground beneath it in coloured light

Often claimed to be the oldest bollard in the City, this is a recycled 17th or 18th century french cannon, buried upright.

It's outside St Helen's Bishopsgate. Check it out if you are in the area or on your way to St Mary Axe

I always say to look up for signs of London's past.
Above my favourite silver and jewellery supply store on Greville Street, Bellore Rashbel, is a large clay pot sliced vertically in half and affixed flat against the brickwork.

I always loved this view from Clerkenwell Road.
- 18th century: St Paul's Cathedral completed
- 19th century: Farringdon Underground station opened
- early 20th century: chimney from the Citigen power station at Smithfield
- 21st century: Shard complete
But more than it seems....

This is Holborn Bars - the former Prudential Assurance Company Building built in the late 1800s. Prudential moved out in 1999 but still seems to own it.

It was designed in Gothic Revival style by architects Alfred Waterhouse and his son Paul, and built by Holland, Hannen & Cubitts

Another ceiling - but what an awesome ceiling it is! The Banqueting House on Whitehall - the only large surviving component of the Palace of Whitehall. The photo doesn't do justice to the amazing Rubens panels. Worth a visit.

This amazing stained-glass window, in the style of a porthole, is on the staircase at the Lloyd's Register Building - founded as the Register of Shipping.

An atmospheric view of the Charterhouse.
This is part of the 14th Century monastery cloister, later made in to a garden with Tudor brickwork. Photo includes a stone flag floor and the remains of a doorway leading to what was once a Carthusian monk's cell.

Victorian "Dolphin lamp standards" provide light on different parts of the Embankment. This is on the north side by Lambeth Palace. Installed by the Metropolitan Board of Works around 1870.

In the churchyard of St Magnus the Martyr there are some stones from the medieval London Bridge - and incredibly this chunk of wood is thought to be a pile from the original Roman bridge. You can touch it. The tree it came from lived over 2,000 years ago!

I LOVE all the micro community libraries that now exist all over London - but this one on Upper Street in Islington is one of my favourites. It only has children's books and it is really well lit, maintained and heavily used - sometimes it has queues!
