According to the ticket fella, the quad biker was playing chicken with the train, which, well, does fit with Palmy generally, and Longburn especially.

We have our own beef so are somewhat insulated. But lamb! To think that we used to buy a side of mutton from Longburn freezing works for $1.75 when we were students!

As a former Palmerstonian whose BFF is Longburn born, I concur.

When we were students and I flatted with 4 guys, we used to get a side of mutton once a week from Longburn freezing works. Pretty sure it was $1.75 but I got mighty sick of roast mutton.

Had a lovely cycle ride along the Longburn shared path before it got too warm.

Longburn is easy to get to along the bike path that goes down Pioneer Highway- but Kairanga is a bit more out of the way.

My feet definitely hurt.

A lot of cyclists on ebikes using the path, which was great to see.

My actual plan had been to look at hiring a bike to go out to photograph Longburn and maybe Kairanga. But that will also be there next time.

Horse riding is a valued recreation activity and, for some communities, an important transport option. When planning shared paths, an inclusive approach works best — one that accommodates a wide range of users where practical, with separation where safety requires it.

Manawatū horse riders bristle at exclusion from proposed shared path
The 30km City to Sea Rail Trail will begin in Longburn and go out towards the coast at Himatangi and Foxton – but a 6km section is in dispute.
