This little Longnosed Snake was discovered by the homeowner’s dog on a cool night in New River. It was likely searching for a slightly warmer and safer place to shelter, which Jason was more than happy to help with.

A Longnosed Snake cruising around in the low light at the end of the day. These snakes are most often nocturnal, but may be found in the early morning or late afternoon, especially in the Spring.

A close of of a Longnosed Snakes namesake. These snakes are commonly mistaken as kingsnakes, even by (especially by!) the born and raised locals.

Longnosed Snakes are very common throughout the urban/wild transition areas, and people find them in yards quite often.

This longnosed snake was skinny, but still managed to get stuck in a tiny hole in the exterior wall of the home.  After some gentle coaxing, a little cooking oil, and a lot of patience, our new friend is now resting comfortably in a warm and spacious pack rat nest. -Litchfield Park

That is a magnificent fish. There are certain fish that make evolution and our coming out of the sea seem even more credible. The Wobbegong is one, the Longnosed Stargazer is another.

Maggie was called to get this young Longnosed Snake that had made its way into an office. For one reason or another, Longnosed Snakes are one onf the most common snakes to find inside homes. They're of course entirely harmless, and the homeowner was mostly concerned with her two cats hurting it.

A longnosed snake got stuck in a garage glue trap, and ended up getting tangled up in a second one while trying to free itself. Thankfully it had dragged itself out into the open to where it was visible, and it could be rescued. Cheyenne was careful to free the snake.

Baby Longnosed snake in the yard tonight. When young they can resemble Kingsnakes. Kingsnakes always have solid black bands, you can see some speckling in this one. Harmless docile snakes that are good for the yard.

A photo of Dad for Father's Day! This pic is around 1954 on the homestead in Appalachia, where I grew up too. I remember one time at the creek, a large fish broke the water. I was certain I'd seen an alligator, but Dad said it was a longnosed gar. It wasn't the first lesson from dad, nor the last.

The fish are Mosquitofish. They were apparently introduced years ago to control the mosquito population. (It did not work) And out competed the local Longnosed Dace. (Now extinct) The ecosystem has adapted to their new neighbours.
