"Uranus, its rings, and its moons this morning, captured under excellent conditions with the 24in scope.

By far my best capture of the epsilon ring to date.

1hr of data with IR720nm longpass filter."

We went to Dodekalitten at Kragenæs on the way home today. Interesting place, but I'd like to go when it's less busy.

IR Converted X-T2 with 760nm longpass filter. Hurriedly tweaked on my phone.

I had a Fuji X-T2 body converted to full spectrum sensitivity. So far having a lot of fun experimenting with filtration and trying to decide what to use for an upcoming project- I really want to punch up the contrast between the little wetlands and the surrounding landscape

This works rather nicely and has a lot of potential.

Here's a comparison of different methods of detecting fluorescence. Explanation in the alt text.

Hopefully we can continue developing this system and get enough comparative data to couple what we see from the sensor with soil properties.

However, doing this requires a load of longpass filters in addition to the lights. This gets expensive, and changing filters with mucky hands sucks. What if there is an easier way?
Luckily for us there is! Digital cameras ARE multispectral sensors!

We can use fluorescence to detect all kinds of things. Police and forensics bods routinely use it to find evidence like blood and other icky fluids.
It also works with bone. Here is some bone fluorescing away in a profile (see the alt text for explanation)

Quartz lightguides beat fibers below 250 nm. There's work showing filter fluorescence can fake UV signals, though I don't have the reference handy. Have you checked your 280 nm longpass for secondary emission?
April 23, 2026 at 3:25 AM
You avoid fibers. Even UV-grade silica attenuates heavily below ~250 nm. The real test is a cutoff filter stack—if the signal vanishes after a 280 nm longpass, it wasn't real UV.

In case you were wondering about how to photograph through polyester/cotton facemasks...<<LP1000 SWIR Longpass 1010-2300nm>>...that is the parameters for selecting filters. In case, you know, you wanted to take photos of someone wearing such a mask.

* Absorptive glass filters from aliexpress, often more of less copies of the schott lineup, decently sharp cutoff, mostly only usable as longpass, high OD possible depending on thickness, easy to cut and grind to size from larger 100x100mm sheets if needed

Another shot of an oarweed kelp bed at low tide. Kayaking out off the shore looks like a lot of fun.

Shot in full spectrum / #infrared using a 530nm longpass filter.
