I think I just have to draw them!
There was a beautiful LOTF graphic novel illustrated by Aimée de Jongh that also had a cuteness to it imo, but I thought it served the story well because characters are children.
I think a good composition will do what it needs to do for tone setting :)

So, I've been watching a lot of #movies lately, and my taste has trended toward the dark and bleak (go fig). If you're in a similar mood, may I recommend "The Plague"? It's a rough watch, but really compelling in a sort of "Lord of the Flies" way. (Also, watch the new BBC series of LotF.)
