I can't believe I'm getting so nostalgic for the 00s era of office software when I worked at other giant bureaucracies like the UN and ragejoined ten different Facebook groups called variations on LotusNotes Sucks or Fuck LotusNotes.

Another banger by J. B. Crawford in his "Computers Are Bad" series, this time going through computer history from PLATO to Lotus Notes. PLATO is probably the most influential computer system almost nobody knows about (unlike, say, Mother of All Demos).

It's genuinely incredible that my company managed to build a brand new timekeeping system that is more confusing and less functional than LotusNotes, an application I'm pretty sure stopped getting regular updates my sophomore year of high school

Also a seriously underestimated contingent of guys who are perfectly normal and also completely useless because they got where they are by accident because they know how to use LotusNotes in 2006 and it's still cheaper to pay one guy $2500k/yr to work 10hrs/mo than it is to buy a new system

I worked for a fairly large corporation that was still using LotusNotes for email and scheduling in 2007. It was kind of different, but not in a bad way.

A recruiter on #linkedin wants to contact me about a #lotus Domino contract role. Clearly they didn't read my profile or CV or they would have noticed that I haven't touched #lotusnotes for the majority of this millennium, and I only do permie not contract.

And documents saved in formats that are no longer readable. Like that amazing novel that was started in LotusNotes or coding that was done on 8" floppies. I did a paper in grad school about the coming digital dark age...and it ain't pretty.

I have a council that used IBM LotusNotes as their primary software. They finally migrated to Office in mid 2010's, but so many of their systems hang off "Domino" or whatever it was called that they were still paying annual fees to HCL (sublicense entity for that one system).
