Thank you to the 285 people who visited the arboretum over the weekend, braving unusually vicious mozzies on both days and a short torrential downpour on the Sunday.

A big thanks to @eucalyptaus.bsky.social for again supporting our open days as part of National Eucalypt Day.

#DYK almost any eucalypt can be kept in a pot!
This one is a Jingymia Mallee, Eucalyptus synandra.
In general, potted plants are more vulnerable to drying out, overheating or freezing. So position your pot somewhere sheltered & convenient for regular watering.

Pedicellate gumnuts (left) are connected to a group (AKA umbel or inflorescence) stalk (AKA peduncle) by individual stalks (AKA pedicels) and hang freely from one another.

Sessile gumnuts (right) lack pedicels and are instead attached directly to the group stalk.

#FlowersOnFriday: The 'operculum' is a defining feature of the eucalypt genera Eucalyptus & Corymbia. Composed of fused petals, this bud cap prevents the growing flower from drying out & reduces insect damage.
In contrast, Angophora species lack opercula & have rudimentary petals & sepals #LoveAGum

Among Australia's parrots, the lorikeets are especially good at extracting nectar from eucalypts.

The tongues of these species feature a specially adapted brush tip and are strong enough to push deep into gum blossoms before they are open, beating other pollinators to the nectar reward! #LoveAGum

#FlowersOnFriday: Pollination strategies!
Insect-attracting gums:
- white/cream flowers = more visible to insects.
- small, shallow flowers = accessible nectar
- tend to have denser populations, where pollinators with small home ranges can carry pollen from tree to tree
