like outside of lowendbox type users like myself who wanted little memory-efficient VMs (my webserver used to use 64MB of RAM for the entire VM), basically alpine existed in this little niche for people doing networking in the field

During Black Friday every year you'll find lots of VPS providers selling cheap hardware at killer prices! I found a random EU one on lowendbox.com. I encrypted the HDD for good measure and it's been running ever since :^)

Vultr is on my "to try" list and it's pretty cheap ($30-$40/yr starter) as well but was curious about what you were using.

The hosting provider is HostUS (I got a cheap plan years ago via lowendbox), the network connection is nominally 1Gbit I think but I've never benchmarked it.
4 vCores, and cpuinfo says they're on an AMD 5800X which may or may not be accurate. (although my code is single-threaded)
