FWIW, "Telepaths Don't Need Safewords" first appeared on a.s.b in November 1991, and the book version was published in March 1992 (debuted at Lunacon in Rye, New York).

Fan Dennis McCunney died on April 29. McCunney chaired Philcon in 1974 and 1975 and Lunacon 34. He was also on the committee to bring the Worldcon to Philadelphia in 1977 and an active conrunner and attendee.

Lunacon

picnic blankets and folding chairs, bonfire, blunts being passed in every direction, and stargazing

Nudity welcome ✨
what could your bluesky-con be about that could draw 200 people

“darthcon” would have dogs to pet and fried potato dishes to sample
i think that if i organized a “Bouiecon” where people got together and, i don’t know, talked breakfast cereals and the constitution, i could get more than 200 people to show up

Hi @markhamillofficial.bsky.social my mother, Lee has her birthday coming up. She helped make WorldCon, Lunacon Shore Leave, and more possible through about 50 years of volunteering in fandom. She has always been a big Star Wars fan. Could you reply to this with a happy birthday for her please? TY!

The late Lunacon was held for many years at the Escher Hilton in Rye, NY. You could go from the fourth floor to the seventh without any stairs, via the transdimensional corridor. (Until those cowards renumbered things, thus rendering it much more confusing.)

One of the many greats this 17-year-old fan pestered for an autograph at the 1972 Lunacon!

LunaCon would be a 3 day celebration of coffee, 30 year old pop culture references, and Inappropriate Books You Read in Middle School. It would be held at one of the filming locations from Pride & Prejudice 2005, and we would have cozy nooks where introvert attendees can slip away & recharge ☺️

Another great whose autograph I snared at the 1972 LunaCon when I was but a bean.

I met James White ages ago. 1980 or 81, at LUNACON. He was funny and charming. Told a story about using a string and a can of beans as a substitute for the spring that moved his typewriter's carriage along as keys were struck.

Asked him after his speech if he eventually ate the can of beans.

And I first saw Chip in the hotel lobby of an early '70s LunaCon, where I recognized him from his author photo on the back cover of the Science Fiction Book Club edition of Driftglass.

Also home of the now-defunct Lunacon!

Remembering Lester del Rey, born on this date in 1915, whose autograph was the first I obtained the weekend I turned 17 at the 1972 LunaCon. And if you're wondering who signed my sheet as Charles Manson — that was Merry Prankster Paul Krassner, one of the founders of the Yippies!

Remembering the late, great Gordon R. Dickson, born on this date in 1923, whose autograph I obtained at the 1972 LunaCon immediately before committing what felt like the greatest faux pas of my fannish career. But hey, I was only 17. Surely I can be forgiven? Anyway, what happened was this ...

I was at Lunacon in upstate NY about 30+ years ago when I found myself in a room with Walt Simonson and about 20 other people and he was talking about working on this book. They didn’t show him the movie he just worked off of stills and the script.

I have this and it’s one of my favorites of his.

As an aside, I think this was part of the midnight cartoon show that I saw at Lunacon in the 90s, along with Duck Dodgers in the 24-1/2 Century!

Fan Alina Chu (b.1956) died on February 28. Chu worked on the early Star Trek conventions as well as Lunacon. She also co-published the 1980s fanzine Nothing Left to the Imagination with Teresa Minambres.

Remembering writer Frank Belknap Long, born on this date in 1901, who I was privileged to meet at the 1972 LunaCon, held the weekend I turned 17. After our encounter, he added his autograph to a sheet which already contained the signatures of many other notables whose names you might recognize.

Remembering the writer Frank Belknap Long, born on this date in 1901, whom teen me met at the 1972 LunaCon, held the weekend I turned 17. I still own the sheet on which he appended his autograph, along with ... Charles Manson? (Who was actually countercultural icon Paul Krassner.) How lucky I was!

Lunacon — a classic fan-run convention — had OSC as a guest of honor 1993, after his homophobic views were known. There was controversy over it at the time.

Card himself gave a speech on tolerating minority viewpoints, implying that he was aware of the controversy.

Fan John Boardman (b.1932) died on May 29. Boardman was a founder of the University of Chicago Science Fiction Club. He was a member of CCNY Sci-Fi and the Lunarians. He served as treasurer for NYCon 3 and was fan GoH at Lunacon 41. He also founded Postal Diplomacy and published its first fanzine.

I met him at an early '70s LunaCon, perhaps even as early as 1972, which at age 17 was only my second year of con-going. So I may have known him in the flesh since nearly the start of my time in fandom.

You use light in an interesting way. I like it, it feels unique.

#Fantasy Lit/Art fan for over 45 years, #smof, #LunaCon veteran. I do not give that complement, very little is *new* in Fantasy. I think the last artitst i felt this way about was @michaelwhelan.bsky.social
