We know in general that Thingol set a quest for a jewel that Beren and Luthien fulfilled but much else can reasonably be questioned

Like, the Beren and Luthien story contains a ton of elements totally absent from any other story — songs of power, glamour disguises, werewolves and other monsters, etc etc etc.
