New wip: Lycopod shawl (from the Big Book of Knitted Shawls hubby snagged from @fcpl.bsky.social) in Knit Picks Chroma. Already loving the stitch definition.
I can’t start a lacy piece w/o a shoutout to @romidesigns.bsky.social who gave me the courage to try.

#ShowMeYourKnits theme this week is #lace. After multiple frogs & changing my mind about the yarn, I’m finally blocking Lycopod from The Big Book of Knitted Shawls. Knit in Malabrigo Sock Candombe & Plata colorways, alternating every other row. Turned out pretty well, I think

Going to kick off #FossilFriday with a widowmaker: a kettle bottom, the stump of a lycopod found embedded in the roof of an underground coal mine. Its tapered shape and lack of tensile strength meant it could pop out of the ceiling with ease, posing significant risk to miners.

I hear there is a Dunkleosteus in the new Jurassic Park movie and I would like to know how tf they got the DNA for that one

Like, I'm pretty sure insects weren't a *thing* in the Devonian so did a bloodsucking shrimp get yeeted into a lycopod what happened

Since I've been working on some lycopsids recently, here's a diagram I made several years ago for a blog post I never got around to finishing.
So, here you go; enjoy some lycopodiophyte anatomy!

Baragwanathia longifolia, a confusing early clubmoss from around 425 million years ago.

Described as Late Silurian (the dating is still controversial), its features are surprising for such an early plant.

This specimen is from Limestone Road, nr Yea, Victoria, Australia

I've started my new job as a geologist with the Kentucky Geological Survey. There are exhibits of two types of fossil trees in and around the KGS building: a cast of a Carboniferous lycopod (my MS thesis) and petrified wood from the Triassic Chinle Formation (my PhD). The universe is a closed loop.

Been crawling about the river Kelvin exploring 330 million years of Glasgow's heritage. Looked up and realised I had attracted a group of very confused spectators, so they got treated to an impromptu geology lesson (apologies for ruining your Sunday with my rock patter 😂)

Couldn't tell you, but I'm guessing all five of them know each other and they're either great friends or harbor insatiable enmity.

(also liverwort, hornwort, forkfern, lycopod, and moss enthusiasts)

Lycopodium clavatum, common names include Stag's-horn clubmoss, running clubmoss, or ground pine.

These lycophytes take 8 years to germinate and another 25 years to mature. That is why plucking these over temporary holiday decorations is abhorrent. #lycopod #clubmoss #plantsky

#paleoctober2025 day 19 : Asterophyllites equisetiformis !

Fossil leaves such as these are super abundant in Europe during the Carboniferous and belonged to horsetails relatives that could reach tree-like sizes
And this time, I'm gonna talk a bit more about paleobotany so if you want, read below !⬇️
