Apple has confirmed that macOS 28, to be released in 2027, will remove Rosetta 2 compatibility mode from Macs. After the change, thousands of applications will stop working.

It's been nearly six years since Apple released the first Macs with Apple Silicon. But up until now the company has continued to support older Mac laptop and desktop computers with Intel Inside. macOS 27 has yet to reach general release. Nevertheless, Apple has already published its file system compatibility guidance for macOS 28. The substance is straightforward. Apple will withdraw support for encrypted Mac OS Extended volumes next year, whether those volumes reside on internal disks or external storage. Users should therefore decrypt any HFS+ drive, or convert it to APFS, before upgrading.

According to an official support document published by Apple, the upcoming macOS 28 release will abandon encrypted HFS+ support. Consequently, users must decrypt their legacy external storage devices before upgrading next year. Alternatively, they can reformat these drives to the modern APFS format to preserve data protection. Impact on Legacy External Drives This structural shift primarily impacts external drives that rely on the classic Mac OS Extended formatting.
