Well, they got it from the National Art Collections Fund, who bought it from Henry Maclear Bate, editor of the Daily Times of Nigeria. Of course, everyone involved was still a bunch of white British men.

It was originally secretly purchased by Henry Maclear Bate for £5 from a local who hid it from the local conservation governmental efforts. Bate then fled the city to smuggle it into London where he sold it for £100. This and two other stolen heads forced artifact theft laws in Nigeria.

This is the Ife Head, a medieval Yoruba brass head found in 1938 in Ife (Nigeria). When the British Museum acquired it in 1939, it caused a huge uproar, because it is a beautifully carved naturalistic bust, but scholars didnt want to believe it was made by African people.
