The river Rhine is estimated to carry between 3,000 and 4,700 tonnes of macrolitter — pieces of litter larger than 25 millimetres in size — towards the North Sea every year, according to research published in Communications Sustainability. 🧪
The river Rhine transports around 4,000 tonnes of macrolitter towards the North Sea each year - Communications Sustainability
In the river Rhine, almost 70% of litter particles above 1 cm in diameter are plastics, most of which come from single-use items, often from private consumers, but they comprise less than 15% of all litter by weight, according to continuous monitoring over 16 months with a custom-made physical-interception litter trap.
