He has a vented cabinet with the JVC NZ9, MadVR for scaling and tone mapping, HTPC's each dedicated to HD / UHD / 3D (active shutter glasses), screen curtain controller, and media server upstairs.

I’m not a fan of VLC.

It’s got:

- huge attack surface (anyone remember the arbitrary code execution from a malformed subtitle?)
- bad tone mapping
- bad subtitle rendering
- high resource usage

It's 2025. Use a MPV derivative, or madVR if you want to go wild.

PSVR2, Ableton and MadVR do not work on Linux, so it’s a no go for me.

Beyond that, my spare parts Bazzite PC performs decently but I’ve ran into enough weird quirks that would stop me from running it on my main rig.

Our Ghost in the Shell movie mini-marathon inspired me to revisit the soundtracks from other Mamoru Oshii films and now I’m reminded that WHOA, Kenji Kawai put out nothing BUT bangers, huh! 🔥👌✨😤

(Also WOW that animation quality!)

Noticed some time ago that madVR renderer had visible skipped rows when watching videos in MPC, and today got so fed up that went through every setting and found the one responsible - unchecking "Use DXVA chroma upscaling when doing native DXVA decoding" on "performance" tab fixes the issue
Comparison between the two states of "Use DXVA chroma upscaling" setting in madVR, left is correct and right is broken. There's a clear jump between two adjacent rows of pixels right above the man's eyes in the right image. Exaggerated difference filter between two captures of the same frame with the setting off and on. There are three clear regions in the image - first 25% vertically are more or less black, showing that those areas are identical between the two. The area between 25% - 75% has prominent differences as a result of DXVA chroma upscaling skipping one line. That area becomes identical if you move the "proper" screenshot 1 pixel down. Then, there's a third area starting around 75% in, as that's where the second line skips occurs. Once again, moving the proper screenshot 2 pixels down from the original position makes those fully black too.

P. S. MPC is *the* way in my books, and if you want good subtitle rendering and perfect rendering you can also throw in madVR and xySubFilter (it's my set-up)

can also add external LAV filters for some nice codecs

So there's something I've been tinkering with with for a LONG time now: Upscaling DVD quality anime.

Left is default VLC. On the right is a custom MadVR preset in MPC-BE. This is all done in real-time on an RTX 3060.

This is NOT AI. This is done with madVR's upscaling settings. More to follow.

I currently use MPC-HC and MadVR and that requires at least a GTX 1660 to max out the quality sliders for upscaling to 4K. Sadly, none of the Android boxes have the horsepower. DirectML and other heavy upscaling algos with MPV seem to have similar requirements. I'll check ebay!

If they are watching it on a modern screen, something in the chain is upscaling already. Might as well be something good. That being said, have you done any comparisons between Sline36 and upscaling used by MadVR and MPV? MadVR looks so good with all the good knobs maxed out.
