I haven’t been south on the Montgomeryshire Canal for a while and was surprised to see it is completely dry beyond the Maerdy Road junction as far as Pool Quay & probably beyond. It seems odd to be pumping millions into making it navigable when barges won’t be able to move for months in dry weather

When they were trying to buy the Falklanders, Michael Moore went to Maerdy in the Rhondda to see if THEY would spurn the offer of £1mn each so quickly. They would not, so it was taken as a proposal to the Argentinian embassy; who were sadly uninterested, happy I guess with the Welshmen they have.

Maerdy. If you search for Michael Moore, TV Nation and Falklands someone has put it on the web. Very dated, oddly if you offer the locals a million US dollars to become Argentinian they were well up for it. Quite a controversial episode given sensibilities at the time. Also Alan Walters, mad.

40 years ago on 30 June 1986, Maerdy Colliery in South Wales produced the valley’s last tram of coal.

Nicknamed 'Little Moscow' after the 1926 General Strike, Maerdy was rock solid throughout the Great Miners Strike 1984/85.

A colour photograph looking into the wooded course of Nant-y-Lamb in Cwm Bodringallt, above Ystrad in the Rhondda Fawr. The view is taken from low on the stream edge, looking upstream into a narrow, enclosed side-cwm. The stream enters from the lower foreground as pale moving water, dark wet stones and shallow brown pools, then bends into the centre of the image beneath a fallen tree trunk. Moss-covered rocks, exposed roots, broken branches and damp earth form the banks. Ferns and dense summer growth fill the left side, while a steeper, darker right bank rises beside the water. The upper frame closes into a canopy of trees and leaves, with a small pale opening of light beyond the trunk. There is no open horizon; the image is about being inside the valley, with water, rock, moss and foliage pressing closely around the viewer. The location is a side-cwm of the Rhondda Fawr. Mynydd Yr Eglwys rises on the west side of Cwm Bodringallt, and Mynydd Ty’n-tyle rises on the east side. The Nant-y-Lamb runs down through this wooded valley toward Ystrad, Bodringallt and the floor of the Rhondda. The historical context is part of the photograph’s meaning. Bodringallt was not only a local place-name attached to this part of Ystrad; it was also the name of a colliery in the lower valley. The photograph does not show colliery buildings, spoil tips or machinery, and it should not be read as a mining photograph in the literal sense. Its connection to mining is through the ground, the valley system and the place-name. What is visible now is a green, wet, shaded valley interior, but the scene belongs to a landscape shaped by coal working, settlement, paths, watercourses and later overgrowth.

📺🌿 Yesterday, Liam met Stacey Dooley in Maerdy during filming for the new BBC series 'Stacey Dooley Cleans Up'.

With the former Maerdy Colliery nearby, it was a great opportunity to discuss the wildlife value of South Wales' coal legacy landscapes.

Looking forward to seeing it on TV in 2027! 💚

I'm on another random free adventure with my bus pass. Heading over the mountain into the Rhondda Fach. Moving down the bus soon, to get away from the antisocial fucker at the back watching films on his phone with the volume up.
