this might be a bit silly but maybe a mahlstick could help? they're not so common nowadays but they used to be used a ton for bracing the hand while painting

Give your brushes back to your father and your mahlstick back to your mother and show me your original face.

(This is my quick Photoshop fix. The same overall realistic style that makes the stretched face look so jarring made patching it together again relatively simple.)
A simple basic Photoshop job. All I did was copy her face from the bridge of the nose up and move it down a smidge, blurring the edge. Her nose now looks like a perfectly nice nose, and her face looks like a human face.

I'm such a wrist-pivoter I used a Mahlstick extensively back when I did oil painting because I didn't have the precision or endurance to paint details while working off the shoulder. I wonder if I trained to draw "normally" I could do better gestural line work

I could never get used to using that type of palette. My left hand would get too tired trying to hold the palette and Mahlstick in my left hand. Kudos to you 👍👏😃

He appears on a page with art collector Ernest Hoschedé and sculptor Eugene Brunet, which may mean he was connected with them in Manet's mind, and may not. The photo was probably taken between 1865-1882, most likely mid 1870s. He's holding what—a cane? An artist's mahlstick? A mini billiard queue?

Reynolds' early self-portrait is a subject that he frequently revisited throughout his career. It is believed to have been painted prior to his trip to Europe and depicts the artist turning towards the viewer, his left hand positioned at his forehead, as if aiding his vision or shielding himself from bright light. In his right hand, he holds an artist's palette and mahlstick. This unique portrayal of the artist with the tools of his profession sets it apart as the only self-portrait of Reynolds in this style. The painting serves as evidence of his pride in his career and his skill as a self-promoter from a young age. In contrast to typical portraiture of the time, where sitters were depicted formally and in established poses, Reynolds chose to depict himself as a man of action caught in the moment of painting.
