Curious what his opinions on Haumea, Makemake, Eris, Ceres, Ixion, Sedna, etc are.

Makemake is a frigidly cold icy body that orbits the Sun well past Neptune. Yet there appears to be a spot on its surface that's *100 degrees* hotter than the ice around it. Or it may have rings. Or both!

Makemake, a distant frozen object past Neptune, maybe isn’t as cold as all that

At the risk of earnest posting: Watching my dear friend Silvia present JWST observations of Makemake and remembering when @plutokiller.com first found Makemake and thinking what a privilege it is to have a front row seat to the expansion of our knowledge of the solar system.

Today's BA newsletter: NASA is trying to save its premier gamma-ray burst observatory which is in a dangerously decaying orbit, and astronomers find gaseous methane on Makemake, a small world past Neptune!

A Southwest Research Institute-led team has reported the first detection of gas on the distant dwarf planet Makemake, using JWST. This discovery makes Makemake only the 2nd trans-Neptunian object, after Pluto, where the presence of gas is confirmed. The gas was identified as methane. 🧪🔭

New article by me for Sky & Telescope: Enceladus-style Hot Spot on Makemake? skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-ne...
Makemake’s “Hot Spot”: Icy Volcano or Dusty Ring?
Even though it’s nearly 4½ billion miles from the Sun, far-flung Makemake has surprised observers with a warmer-than-expected temperature that is challenging to explain.

"make pluto a planet again!" okay you win pluto is once again a planet. that means so is ceres. and orcus and makemake and a bunch of trans-neptunian objects and also maybe zoozve. FUCKIN' zoozve. teach your children about zoozve

and mother fucking haumea

It's fine to disagree with the IAU about the definition of "planet"; however, if your definition includes Pluto but not Ceres, Orcus, Haumea, Quaoar, Makemake, Gonggong, Eris or Sedna, you don't actually care what a planet is – you just want the exact nine planets you learned in primary school back.

If you’re willing to stretch the definition of “hot,” we may have just discovered a hot spring in the outer solar system on the dwarf planet Makemake.

Largest to smallest:
Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Gonggong, Quaoar, Sedna, Ceres, Orcus
