Shadi Kaur takes its name from the Shadi Kaur river, which flows from the hills north of Pasni to the Arabian Sea. The area lies in Pasni tehsil of Gwadar district, on the old road between Pasni and Turbat and on the route that links Turbat to the Makran Coastal Highway.

4/ Most Makran tsunami studies are computer simulations: 63% of them. Only 9% study the traces that past tsunamis left on the coast, such as sand layers and boulders. Such traces point to a possible tsunami in western Makran about 1,000 years ago.

6/ Landslides appear to be the second most important source. In 100 simulated landslide tsunamis off western Makran, Chabahar in Iran and Muscat in Oman stood out as the most exposed. No meteotsunami is on record in the Gulf of Oman, but cyclones reach it, like Gonu in 2007.

2/ In the Makran, the Arabian plate sinks under Eurasia at about 20 mm a year. A wedge of sediment scraped off the sinking plate is 350 to 400 km wide, and the sediment is up to 7 km thick. Its earthquakes are fewer than in the zones on either side, yet it has made tsunamis.

Each square is 463 m by 419 m here, so the bay, the towns of Chabahar and Konarak and the shore appear as coarse blocks, the sea in shades of blue by depth and the land in shades of sand by height. 5/ The great earthquake on the plate boundary is not the only source. Our review gathers the others: splay faults that branch up from it, normal faults that reach down to it, landslides on steep undersea slopes, and possibly storms, which can drive a meteotsunami.

3/ Tsunamis are on record in 326 BC, 1008, 1524, 1897, 1945 and 2013, not all from great earthquakes. The 1945 waves, from a magnitude 8.1 earthquake and an undersea landslide, killed several hundred people. The 2013 waves followed an inland earthquake, likely via a landslide.

Traces of the one of 1008 were found on the coast of western India; its source is unclear. The one of 1524 is in the catalogue, its source unknown. The one of 1897 was perhaps a storm at sea, or a volcano, as dead fish were reported. In 1945, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake at sea, with an undersea landslide, killed several hundred people, and the waves rose 3 to 7 m up the shore of Iran. In 2013, after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on land in Pakistan, the waves most likely came from an undersea landslide.
