Be careful, I've seen a lot of maplewashing at the grocery.

oh great another maplewashing story

Regulatory capture, a media ecosystem that manufactures public consent to prevent gainful reforms, and maplewashing of pro-pollution lobbying effects as Canadian patriotism at the expense and suffering of today's (and the future) working class.
I have many answers to this. One of them is that the version of pro-pollution lobbying that replaced outright climate denial - which is basically that we can’t stop climate change on our own, so there’s no point worrying about it domestically at all - has triumphed, for now at least.
What the heck is happening in Canada?

Canada’s electricity production today is “less green than it was just five years ago”.

Haven't bought any American products since Nov 2024. Sadly, that hasn't led #Sobeys, #Loblaw, the #PattisonGroup or other vendors from loading grocery aisles & produce sections with Product/Produce of the USA. Plus there's rampant #MapleWashing. It's grocers, not consumers who lack patriotism.

A lot of Maplewashing going on.
A Star analysis reveals U.S. firms dominated federal contracts despite PM Mark Carney’s ‘Buy Canadian’ promise.

So FarmBoy ... which is it?

The tag was nestled underneath a potato on top layer.

If you're going to maple wash, put some effort into it.

Carney has mastered manufacturing consent with a good maplewashing. “They’re not selling it off, the government will retain ownership of the underlying assets!” You guys are hearing yourselves, right?

Canadians can report a food item that was incorrectly labeled here.
Let’s stop Maplewashing.

#MapleWashing is alive and well in Canada! When products 'produced in the States' are labeled as 'produced in Canada' that is called Maple Washing. They're trying to fool us into buying American products. 🖕🏻
Please be vigilant when grocery shopping or any shopping!

@mark-carney.bsky.social When are you going to start cracking down on these stores and levy some heavier fines against them? They are undermining our efforts as Canadians to support our country, with these deceitful and fraudulent practices. End the #MapleWashing.

Be aware out there. American products can easily be snuck onto Canadian shelves. Remember to report #Maplewashing to the the government at inspection.canada.ca/en/food-safe...

With all of the food issues coming from the USA, be safe!
Keep an eye on those USA recalls, just to be sure.
American beef labelled as Canadian beef at Costco share.google/5ZDrMLrds7UW...

Getting really tired of the #MapleWashing in Canadian grocery stores.
Costco is an American company so we kind of expect deception, but many Canadian grocers are guilty as well.
Some definitive legislation is in order.
This Ontario man thought he bought Canadian beef at Costco. Then he saw the label in the back
Randy Thompson of Gravenhurst, Ont., stopped at a Costco in Orillia this week to pick up some Canadian beef. Instead, he unintentionally bought beef from the United States.

Here's an excellent free Canadian tool to help you root out the maplewashing of Yankee products.
If you find a store doing that, name and shame them loudly.

Maplewashing should be punishable by 1 million per case. Loblaws is the worst offender but definitely not the only one.
It needs to cost them to make them stop. If it’s a slap on the wrist it’s just the cost of business.
August 26, 2026 at 3:37 AM
Mail your MP. It's time to make the penalty real enough that they won't risk "Maplewashing".
Currently the maximum fine from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is $15,000.00.
That is not a deterrent, it's a business model.

I moved to Canada after two decades in the US last year and nearly the first thing I noticed was how united the country was — not anti-American, just determined in its sovereignty. Canadian flags everywhere. Last year’s word of the year was ‘maplewashing.’ No US liquor on the shelves anywhere.

For example, Carney made a big deal about standing up for the auto sector and the French language, but was conspicuously silent on "digital trade alignment." Ditto on the F-35s and Golden Dome. And questions remain about maplewashing US tech companies.

This is in #YGK. It's #MapleWashing. This is #TaylorFarms shitty spinach, grown in the US. This is the company that has the #Cyclospora parasites in their greens.
This NOT grown in #Canada and it's NOT safe to eat.
@markgerretsen.bsky.social - this needs to be addressed and stopped.

Guard the Leaf, doing his usual great coverage of Canadian-USA issues.

He also mentions Maplewashing, which will become increasingly likely as the USA struggles to sell products (and as product prices drop).

There is a Canadian line/site for food labelling! Report it. Be safe, and save others.

From the WSJ: U.S. products lose favor as Canadians turn away from U.S.-made products. To appeal to anti-U.S. shoppers brands and retailers are touting their Canadian credentials in a practice that’s become known as “maplewashing” or “mapleglazing.” @POTUS
