Tokangawhā / Split Apple Rock

Approx. 50 metres off the coast between Kaiteriteri and Mārahau, Māori legend says the rock was split by two gods arguing over ownership.

Geologists say it was a naturally occurring joint in the granite which water, waves and ice weakened over time.

I came back from Marahau yesterday. During the big blow I saw pukeko bowled across a paddock like tumble weed. (The gust passed and they scuttled into the shrubbery).

Abel Tasman walk done! Five days, four nights, 16 kilograms of pack weight, one water taxi, 64km on foot, one item (that I'm aware of—my toothpaste) stolen by thieving weka, four ocean swims, and countless sandfly bites.
Walking through Anchorage on my way to Mārahau. Anchorage is a huge beach with a huge campsite and lots of boats and kayaks and general busy-ness. On the way south from Anchorage. Mārahau in the distance. The end is in sight! Almost at Mārahau now.

Wānaka to Mārahau will take all day. On that part of your journey I recommend Blue Pools, Punakaiki Rocks, Buller Swing Bridge, Wakefield Bakery, Toad Hall Motueka, Riwaka Resurgence.

A wide trail winds through forested hills above a beach with golden sand and a very blue sea. In the far distance are the peaks of the Bryant and Richmond Ranges. This is between Anchorage and Mārahau.

• Department of Conservation e 48m • We are working with New Zealand Police investigating the senseless vandalism of multiple pou whenua along the Abel Tasman Coast Track. The sites, located at Medlands Beach close to Bark Bay and further along at Marahau, have been closed off by our staff. The first pou whenua looks as though someone took a hammer to it, and paint was thrown over the second. These are mindless acts of destruction. Honestly, we're not sure which is stranger - that someone would do something like this, or that they planned enough to bring a hammer and paint along to do it. One pou whenua is of Hohaia Rangiauru, an important Te Atiawa chief of Motueka. A hui was held yesterday morning with mana whenua, where Hohãia's descendants expressed sadness at the vandalism. Replacement and future protection measures for all the pou in the National Park were discussed, and mana whenua plan to visit and perform karakia at the site to impose a rhui which will deem the site tapu until further notice. If anyone has any information about these crimes, please call NZ Police on 105 and cite case number 241223/3689. Read more: https://bit.ly/49ThJSm

A bust of a woman orientated sideways so it appears she is coming through the wall. Her skin and hair are a deep lapis lazuli blue. Her hair, thick and long and straight, flows freely toward the ground; fanning out like hair freshly shampooed and dried (author's note: read - like my hair. Mārahau to Picton I recommend Rai Valley bakery, Pelorus River at the bridge, Havelock Mussel Pot, Makana Confectionery, St Claire Estate, Seamus Irish Bar Picton. Keep your eyes open on ferry for penguins in the sounds and dolphins and albatross in the Strait.

This is a photo of an estuary, with a rocky bank with large flowering harakeke where the photographer is standing. The tide is mostly out, with just thin ribbons of water flowing through that shine silver reflecting the sky. The photo is taken at sunset so there is an orange glow, but you can see blue sky in the distance and hills on the horizon.
