Great work! Last week Juliane Entzian (@j-entz.bsky.social) and Melanie Habermann (@mhab.bsky.social) represented our group at the Topic 6 Symposium 2026 at GEOMAR. Topic 6 is one branch of the Helmholtz research area 'Changing Earth - Sustaining our Future' with focus on Marine and Polar Life.

First up, a mystery: an envelope with my mother's handwriting on it for some reason. Inside, the January 1989 inauguration of George H.W. Bush, and something about (I assume) Tony Montana and "the Jungle" — since this was Cincinnati Enquirer, it's likely to mean the stadium there.

The #OSR10 reveals European seas under growing pressure.

As waters warm, #MarineHeatwaves intensify, and #Storms can grow more severe, threatening marine life and coastal communities.

The ocean is never silent. But it is predictable.

One year of baseline data teaches an AI what normal sounds, feels and measures like. Anything else gets flagged.

And when marine life suddenly goes quiet in a corridor? That silence is the signal.

Maerl beds shelter marine life, acting as nurseries for commercially important species.

These fragile habitats take centuries to form, yet can be crushed in minutes by bottom-towed fishing gear.

♻️ In Colombia, local artisans turn recovered ghost fishing gear into new objects. The strength of this IKI project lies in the community's engagement – those affected by the ecosystem are the ones taking action. Read how they tackle the threat to marine life ⬇️

More than 2,000 vessels detected across Cyprus' marine protected areas
Satellite observations conducted by Periopsis recorded a total of 2,060 vessels entering the marine protected areas (MPA’s) in Cape Greco, Lady’s Mile, Latsi-Akamas in the summers of 2024 and 2025, raising concerns over potential damage to local biodiversity and marine life. “These areas protect ecologically valuable coastal habitats, including Posidonia oceanica meadows, which provide important nursery and feeding grounds for marine species, support biodiversity and contribute to coastal protection and carbon sequestration,” Periopsis said. The research laboratory warned that increased activity in the area was putting Posidonia oceanica meadows, a type of seagrass that grows very slowly, at particular risk as damage that occurred in seconds could persist for several decades. The analysis used an AI vessel-detection system based on visible satellite imagery, to detect vessels at sea, comparing detections with the automatic identification system (AIS) data, a vessel-tracking system through which vessels share information on their identity and journey. “Of the 2,060 detections, 1,114 – about 54 per cent – had no matching AIS signal in the available data, revealing a substantial visibility gap between what could be seen from space and what appeared in conventional tracking systems, emphasising the importance of remote sensing in such surveys,” Periopsis said...

Yes we do have lots of migratory birds. Sadly this year they’re bringing H5N1 bird flu with them. It’s killing lots of our local birds and marine wild life, in coastal areas.

that's a cobia. They often hang around large rays, sharks, manatees, and other relatively slow moving large marine life. They also hang around schools of fish and rays. They sometimes ride in the slipstream of large rays so they don't have to actually swim and can conserve energy.

Don't Camp forget Pendleton(USMC), a Marine Corp Recruiting Depot, and Marine Corp Air Station. They're kind of a big deal here. I guess Trump hates the Marines because their motto is Semper Fidelis and he's never been faithful to anything in his whole damn life.
