Mark Fuhrman, the controversial Los Angeles Police Department detective, who became widely known for his involvement in the 1994 OJ Simpson murder investigation, has died at the age of 74. Fuhrman, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of throat cancer, passed away on 12 May 2026 in Kootenai County, Idaho. He first arrived at the scene of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and was instrumental in finding critical evidence, including a bloody glove and blood in Simpson's Ford Bronco. During the subsequent trial, Fuhrman’s credibility was heavily challenged due to recordings revealing his use of racial slurs, leading to a perjury conviction in 1996, making him the only person connected to the case to be criminally convicted. Following his retirement from the LAPD, Fuhrman became a true crime author and media commentator, frequently appearing on Fox News. He publicly apologised for his past racist remarks and defended his collection of World War II artefacts. Despite the controversies, he maintained that he had no part in framing Simpson, describing himself as a scapegoat during the trial. Fuhrman received medical treatment for his cancer but ultimately chose to discontinue it. No funeral will be held. His death marks the end of a highly polarising figure in American criminal history.

Mark Fuhrman, the former Los Angeles Police Department detective whose testimony and conduct became pivotal in the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial, has died at the age of 74. Fuhrman, who led the investigation into the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, became a nationally recognized figure after discovering a bloody glove outside Simpson's Brentwood estate. During the trial, Simpson's defense team accused Fuhrman of planting the glove, citing his controversial background and recorded racist remarks as evidence of bias. Fuhrman denied using racial slurs under oath, but recordings later revealed otherwise, seriously undermining his credibility and affecting the public perception of the LAPD. In 1996, Fuhrman pleaded no contest to perjury for falsely denying his use of racist language, receiving probation and a fine.
