Eels have a fascinating life journey! We tend to think of it as a cycle, but that's not how they experience it.

Theirs is a linear journey, as I've tried to show with this map, explaining their travels, changes, and challenges.

Ducks Unlimited Canada partnered with local organizations to reflood the land in 1938. Local residents volunteered their time and labour to build a 1.3 km-long earthen dam. It became a bird sanctuary and today the wetland is 4,100 acres in size.

The sand is poured onto the soft marshland to distribute the weight evenly. The pressure gradually displaces the water contained in the soil. Whilst the sand is being laid, drainage systems are installed to channel the water directly from the marshland into the receiving watercourse.
