Nzinga Ana de Sousa Mbande (1583 – 1663) ruled as a queen of the Ambundu Kingdoms of Ndongo (1624–1663) and Matamba (1631–1663), located in present-day northern Angola. She was trained in military and political affairs from childhood and conducted many military campaigns. #CelebratingWomen

First an ambassador to Portugal for her father and brother, Nzinga was proud and clever with a strategic mind. She took the throne when her brother died, and staved off Portuguese attempts to conquer Ndongo and Matamba, fighting off their slavers and armies. #WyrdWednesday
