Pro-Israel debater Nick Matau outlines live strategy against online hate speech | The Jerusalem Post
His advocacy began in May 2021 amid a surge of anti-Israel sentiment on TikTok, where he made a video calling out virtue signaling that went viral and drew an overwhelming wave of antisemitism.

Older drafts also implied a romance between Matau and Nokama. Eventually, many character moments and unfitting gags were removed, such as Matau's infamous line about "urges" that insinuates a sex joke. Incidentally, this line made it into Greg Farshtey's novelization.

I can just imagine Matau and Whenua variants where the former looks absolutely miserable and the latter looks elated

Their teamwork is also undersold by the fight with Makuta. In the old script, five Toa engage him (Matau stays behind in the Speedster) but in the film, Vakama takes him on alone and the others only arrive for the final move. Regardless, Nokama announces the support for Vakama in both versions.

Throughout the plot, Nokama encourages Vakama. She doesn't oppose, push or berate him to do better. Notably, until the final act, she's the only member of his team who refers to Vakama by name rather than by his job or some insult. Matau only says Vakama's name at the end.

With Nokama slowly showing that her leadership skills aren't always up to the task, Vakama begins to take more assertive action, rushing to help Matau when he's taken down, with Nokama failing to stop him. I like that there's no adversarial conflict about who should lead.

The disagreement is still referenced in the film. Nokama acknowledges that Matau was right and she should have listened. Since the hut scene got cut, the previously mentioned exchange between Matau and Nokama was dubbed over the footage to give an alternate setup to this payoff.

During the Kikanalo stampede, Nokama was meant to lead the others into a hut, aggressively insisting to Matau that it's the safest hiding spot, until the animals burst in and force the Toa to flee. This scene would have shown that even a learned teacher can be wrong and make bad calls.

These lines aren't in the old script, the storyboards or the novel. They were added in post, explaining why they don't line up with any mouth animation. This is because a different scene depicting a disagreement between Nokama and Matau was originally set to take place.

Nokama finds out how to get the Great Disks, she announces the team to the city, she comes up with the plan to topple Lhikan's statue to crush the Vahki, she leads Vakama and Matau to the transport chute, she spots the craft to hitch a ride on, she allies with the Kikanalo herd.
