You have this precisely backwards. Traffic engineers hate putting in traffic lights and insist on a certain volume of pedestrian traffic before it is “warranted.” Buttigieg overrode the traffic engineers’ recommendation and put in a signal at that intersection. It just had not been installed yet.

Extremely related point: people don’t want to pay more for quality, they want to be cheap and complain!
This is why flying is bad now. People will say they want full service airlines and wax nostaligic about the golden age of jet travel (when it was unaffordable), but revealed preferences are that people choose the lowest up front price option when spending their own money.

full agree with this! waymo seems to be self driving done the correct way - incrementally, with a fuckton of lidar, and only in well-mapped areas bsky.app/profile/maxd...
That said these systems are NOT all created equal and everyone involved with Tesla’s “full self driving” and “autopilot” features should be prosecuted for consumer fraud because camera-only autonomous driving is WILD dangerous.

It’s actually wild how many people, likely including cops, believe that traffic laws serve no real purpose other than to create a pretext for the police to pull people over and ticket them.
