The Packers have reached an injury settlement with TE McCallan Castles, and he has been waived from IR.

McCallan Castles, Trey Dean, and Thomas Yassmin were waived/injured. If they clear waivers, they revert back to the Packers' IR (probably to reach an injury settlement later).

It’s sad to see any of these guys get cut, but at least this frees up McCallan Castles to pursue his true calling: play a gritty private detective in 1970’s Los Angeles.

It's a big day in the NFL, and unfortunately, this big day can also be a bad day for a plethora of different players. In fact, some may even say that this is the saddest day of the calendar year when it comes to the NFL. For those who are unfamiliar, Sunday, Aug 30, is the 53-Man roster day for NFL teams.

The Packers Should Check In On Zach Ertz #Packers #GoPackGo
The Packers Should Check In On Zach Ertz
The Green Bay Packers suddenly find themselves in a very thin spot at tight end. Tucker Kraft is working his way back from the torn ACL he suffered last October, while Luke Musgrave continues to deal with a neck injury. RJ Maryland and Luke Lachey were also dealing with injuries before being waived, prompting the Packers to bring in McCallan Castles and Drew Biber to replenish the position. Still, Green Bay's tight end depth is a legitimate concern heading into the preseason.  This is where the free-agent market could become an avenue worth exploring for Green Bay. With a limited pool of available players at this point of the year, Zach Ertz could be an interesting name for Brian Gutekunst to consider. Ertz suffered a torn ACL last season, but he has since been cleared for all football activities and wants to play in 2026. He will turn 36 in November, yet the veteran tight end has been productive in recent years. Over the past two seasons, he has recorded 116 receptions for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns.  This would not be the first time the Packers have explored the possibility of adding Ertz. Back in 2020, Green Bay explored a potential trade for the veteran tight end before the deadline. At the time, he was only 29 years old and still in the prime of his career.  However, those talks never materialized after he suffered a high ankle sprain and was placed on injured reserve. While the circumstances are different now, Brian Gutekunst has shown interest in the Pro Bowl tight end before.  Additionally, Ertz has familiarity with Jonathan Gannon from their time together in Philadelphia and Arizona. Beyond that, he would bring a proven track record as a reliable pass catcher and a veteran presence to the tight end room.  More importantly, the former Pro Bowler would not need to be the focal point of the offense. He could serve as a complementary piece alongside Tucker Kraft while providing more blocking value than Luke Musgrave and another reliable option in the passing game.  This is why finding a reliable second tight end matters for Green Bay. They do not need another star at the position, but they need someone they can trust to stay on the field and keep their full offensive package available.  That is especially important considering how often Green Bay uses 12 personnel. Last season, they ran two-tight-end sets on more than 33% of their offensive plays, the fifth-highest rate in the NFL, according to Sumer Sports.  Recently, Matt LaFleur mentioned that the Packers have focused this offseason on improving their pacing, getting in and out of the huddle quicker, and creating a faster-paced offense. If Green Bay wants to maintain that tempo while using 12 personnel, they need two tight ends who can stay on the field and be trusted in both the passing game and as blockers.  A pairing like Tucker Kraft and Zach Ertz would give Green Bay that flexibility. They could keep the same personnel on the field and prevent defenses from getting opportunities to substitute and match up.  Spotrac currently projects Ertz to land a one-year, $6.2 million contract with his next team. For a player with his experience and track record, that is a reasonable price for Green Bay. The Packers would be looking for him to be a reliable veteran who can contribute immediately while bringing valuable experience from years of competing in the NFL.  Beyond what he can provide on the field, Ertz could also bring another experienced voice to the locker room. The Packers have built a talented young core, but they still need more players with experience in high-pressure situations and the kind of perspective that comes from going through playoff battles.  Ultimately, this is a move that makes sense for both sides. Ertz would have the opportunity to join a team with championship aspirations, while the Packers would add a reliable veteran who can step in behind Tucker Kraft and provide immediate value. There would naturally be some concerns given his age and recent knee injury, but considering the potential impact and projected cost, this feels like the type of low-risk, high-reward move that could benefit everyone involved.    Filed Under: Packers NewsFeaturedFelipe Reis Aceti PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHEESEHEAD NATION WEEKLY NEWSLETTER HERE. __________________________ Felipe is a Brazilian Packers writer covering the #GoPackGo for CheeseheadTV, Zone Coverage, and Packers Talk.
